Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need help buying a bicycle!!!

Hi... I'm new here but I needed some help... I haven't rode a bike since I was probably 13-15 and now I'm 24. I need help choosing a good bike because I'm going to start cycling again to help me lost weight... I need a bike that is durable and can hold my weight, I'm 6'4 and 270 lbs... Is there any bike at all that can hold my weight in the $200-300 price range? It won't be a trick bike or anything like that... I will just be riding it on (mostly flat) road. Or if anyone can give me tips on how to choose a right bike that will hold my weight that would work...

Any suggestions / help is appreciated.

Take a look on line for some good values.
Here are a few suggestions:
  • 36 spoke wheels
  • 22+ inch frame size
  • Upright riding position
  • Adjustable stem and bars

I need help buying a good road bike for a girl. I just relocated here from Georgia (sans husband) and want to start riding...I live in the Mountain View area, so any suggestions about good bike stores and routes would be appreciated also.

And OP, FlatSix has covered the bases mostly. For $300 you're going to get a bike that runs, but it won't be anything special. Bikesdirect is the place to start for a cheap bicycle, out of the links he provided, I would recommend: https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/dawes/eclipse3.htm (you can order the men's edition)

I just took a quick look through the bikes listed on bikes direct, so it might not be the absolute best.

Also, a good plan, is to reward your self with a nicer bike when you get down to a certain weight, 220 lbs or something.

Unless your absolutely limited to $300, I would recommend spending a little more and getting a Trek 7.2FX or one of the other brand's comparable bikes, $530, https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/bike_path/fx/72fx/

check out the Clydesdales subforum. Lots of good information in there for us big guys. Definitely look at a used bike in that price range as the new bikes for that price are basically junk.

you can pick up a decent used mountain bike from craigslist for <$300. at 6'4" you should be looking out for the extra large frames.

Welcome to the Bay Area ... some of the best year round riding in the country

We will need a bit more information about the type of bike you like and your riding style.
First a few local bike shops:

The Bicycle Outfitter - great local shop with excellent customer service
https://bicycleoutfitter.com/

Chain Reaction Bicycles - great shop with Trek and Gary Fisher bikes only
https://www.chainreaction.com/

On line shop if you like Women's specific:

Good to know y'all have a sense of humor. FlatSix had the most useful information. I will check those out. Yes, I am in Mountain View, CA. I am loving it! Awfully cold here though. Hoping it will warm up and dry out soon. Once I get my new bike, anyone local up for a ride one weekend? Show a girl around?

Glad to help. Both of the LBS that I mentioned have organized rides.
Just show up for the group rides and you will meet a lot of new folks
