Cheap way to get 10-speed?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cheap way to get 10-speed?

I just ordered a Planet-X Kaffenback frameset, made of something real, which I plan to build into a rain bike, with 700x32s and fenders.

I have a spare Rival groupset lying around, which I pulled off my Excalibur frameset prior to selling it (note to self - upgrade sig), which I could put on this bike.

I was thinking of keeping that groupset for a future build (that Lynskey which I am not going to buy) - in that case, I was wondering what would be an inexpensive way to build up a 10 speed bike. In case you're wondering, I'd like to keep it 10 speed in order to keep my wheels/cassettes interchangeable.

Bar-ends, inexpensive brake levers off Ebay, Shimano or SRAM derailleurs - what about cranks? Any suggestions on inexpensive compact double cranks?

TIA,
V.

SRAM Apex seems to get good reviews, and at $550 (I just clicked on the first google link) for the whole group seems like a pretty cheap way to get into 10spd

Throw the Rival on there until you have a use for it.

But otherwise, I've heard decent things about the new Microshift shifters/derailleurs. The Nashbar 10 speed integrated shifters are $150 before discount codes, while the Shimano and SSRAM 10 speed bar end shifters will run you near that much before you even get brake levers. Shimano 105 cranks are fairly inexpensive, with FSA Gossamer even cheaper, and both are good enough.

All depends on your definition of 'inexpensive'.

I've seen prices in the range of $400-500 for a complete 105 groupset online in the past... I'd consider that a great deal and good price for a quality groupset to put on a new frame...

You can get 10-speed indexed downtube shifters. Or any DT shifters will work with any cassette if you put it in friction mode.

Well, I was sort of thinking of trying to cobble something together, rather than purchasing a full groupset. I did that with my 29er commuter - mix of CX crankset, disc brakes and Tiagra shifters on a drop barred 29er frame, and had a lot of fun with the building process. Wouldnt mind doing the same here- and obviously, if I save money, a bonus.

My plan is to try to do everything in the $300-350 range. Anything more and I might as well just use the Rival groupset that I have lying around, and retain the double-tap that I like/am familiar with on all my other bikes.

The microshift option looks interesting. Anyone know if they'll work with a SRAM crank/FD (I just realized I have an extra Rival FD lying around as well)?

Otherwise, the Dura Ace bar-ends (great price - thanks for that link!) + the Rival crankset would be perfect.

Thanks again for the help!

V.

If it's a rain bike, then buy used off Ebay ..... thousands of parts to choose from. Spend as little or as much as you want.
