Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm looking to drop a little bit of weight off my Colnago, I just sold off a bike and have a bit of money to play with. Minus changing the group out, what would net me the greatest gains in weight.

I'd imagine I could lose a decent amount of weight with the saddle/seatpost

Ward Ti spindles for your pedals.

Cranks

Bars

Stem

Seatpost, or even just Smud hardware for yours

Saddle or possibly saddle post combo from Berk

last, but not least

I've got about 300, which I know isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things but. I know you said Ward spindles are 80, which is a good place to start. The stem is 130ish grams, I can't save a significant amount there. KCNC Skewers may net some grams for cheap. Do you know of any saddles that are similar in shape to the Mantra or a Romin? The carbon railed version of the Romin is only 40 grams lighter than my Mantra.

Zeros with Ward Spindles. Ward Spindles have no weight limit last time I checked. Get the steel plates for the cleats, it will extend cleat life. If they work for people like Thor Hushovd, and Fabian Cancellara Speedplays should be fine for you.

dura ace 7700 is perfect for a "retro bike with STI conversion".... but it also will fetch a fair amount of money sold on eBay... you could drop more than a pound (maybe even 1.5lbs) if you installed the older version of SRAM Red. You could also drop near to a pound if you put SRAM force on it. There are always huge savings if you buy the SRAM groupsets through eBay sellers.

wheels are a definite upgrade too. 1500g or sub 1500g wheelsets can be found in the $500 range - its a bit of a golden age for light/inexpensive/strong/quality wheels right now... as long as you're not looking for more than 30mm rims.

if you can find any of the new upper end campy groups for a good price you'll save about the same weight as compared to SRAM...sometimes you can get lucky with craigslist with a guy selling off a whole campy group... but the best bet is to buy through the UK dealers that have the groups brandnew at ridiculous prices sometimes.

Leave the stem alone. Skewers are definitely a good choice on a budget. I don't know anything about those saddles you mentioned. Being on a budget, maybe an Extralite, Ultra Star expander if needed, Fibre-Lyte backplate for the RD, Carbon Pulleys, and Aluminum bolts for the derailleurs.

Colnagos, well any Italian bike, well any bike really should have Campagnolo components.

Sadly the only Campagnolo I own is a cable guide on my Trek. One day, oh yes.... One day....

My bike is at 16.02 with my keys and heavy stock stem. 100mm service course sl coming in and speedplay zeros TI...should put me at target under 16lbs loaded. I didn't cut the seat post...I may though, had 3 inches excess, they said my ride quality would change

never heard of that...can't imagine why that'd be the case.

Like the steerer tube, only downsides of cutting the seatpost are a) if your position happens to change and b) resale value.

maybe we should start a weight weenie parts swap?!

I've got this Woodman Post EL seatpost (31.6d 250mm) lying around (my bikes all have 27.2d seatposts right now).

I'm looking to swap it for a 27.2 weight weenie post in black.

Then again its always good to have a spare 31.6d weight weenie post for future builds....

They said it had to do with flex and compliance, I'm still trying to wrap my head around it, I would imagine a seat posy at it limit point rides the same as one half way inserted
