Just picked up a Trek 2.1 (2011)

Hey guys, complete n00b here. I found myself getting fat and since I really hate running, I figured I start up biking again. Used to do some mtn biking in the past, but I didn't like the idea of having to drive to somewhere, not to mention no way I'm going to mount a bike rack on my car. Went to a couple of bike shops and decided on this Trek 2.1 :D Now I just need to start riding!!:thumb:

Good purchase, flip the stem. I bought a 2010 2.1 to start riding and i've logged close to 3,000 miles on it since i bought it. It's a great bike.

First, welcome aboard!

Next, your story is so typical. Almost identical to mine. Great bike. Congrats.
I too picked up the same Trek (as an '09 1.5 which is the identical frameset)
and rode it to a 40lb loss in a couple of months.

I hate running too.
Started out MTBing.
Hated the idea of having to drive to ride.
Ended up getting a road bike (the 1.5).
Fell in love and lived happily ever after (wait for it, wait for it...).

:D

Now if you were in your mid-30's +, it'd be just another add on.

Congrats on the new bike. Hopefully you live where you can ride it outdoors right now. I get to test my mental conviction indoors.

Ahh, and you got the black/red/white paint job too :) Those are a good bang-for-the-buck bike. I just transplanted my stuff onto a 2.3 frameset (same frame and fork, different paint) from my venerable Schwinn Paramount (Reynolds 853 steel). I'm looking forward to this season.

What's your riding plans? Are you a member of a club? That helps stay motivated, when you've got people to meet and go riding with.

thanks for the welcome. I'm in so cal, and the weather was PERFECT today, hovered around 80 degrees :)

I'll most likely look at joining some of the local rides to start off with, and work up from there. Also trying to get some of my friends to buy bikes as well haha.

And about flipping the stem, I was in between a 54 and 56, ended up going with the 54. However, I do feel like I need some more stretch, so I may end up flipping it to see how it will feel. Or I may just wait for my fitting and let the results of that decide.

Where in So Cal are you at? Can't beat this weather right now.

I'm in Costa Mesa. You?

For now I'm still trying to get the hang of clipless pedals. Not so much trouble unclipping, but I tend to do a fair amount of hunting to get clipped in. Almost wondering if SPD's were a bad idea.

Very nice.

If the 1.9 was available here when I had my Trek, I probably would've upgraded to it (full Ultegra).

I'm in Burbank, did you get SPD's or SPD-SL?

sosojeffcc 01-15-11 08:56 PM

I got SPD's. Main reason being that I wanted something I can "walk" in. Probably didn't put as much thought into it as I should have.

Give it just a little time. SPDs are fine and in a week or so you'll be clipping in and out without a secand thought.

EEK!

Watch that.

Having said that, nice bike. I've got the 2010 2.1, love it (Though with probably half the cost of the bike in tweaks, I probably should've just spent more in the start... Haha

That's a little more informative, actually.

Definitely wait for the fitting. Ignore anyone who tells you to flip the stem, unless it's the guy who's doing the fitting.

ancker 01-16-11 10:15 AM

With regards to flipping the stem. Maybe I'm missing something but it appears the stem angle is due to the angle of the steerer tube and not any built in angle of the stem itself. Wouldn't flipping *that* stem put it right back in the same position, just upside down?

sosojeffcc 01-16-11 12:02 PM

Yep, I find myself guilty of cross chaining quite often, but not for any long durations. I feel really silly about it too, since I used to be quite aware of it in the mtb days. Still trying to get used to the double though, need to do alot more shifting when involving the chainrings.

Just got back from my first "real" ride, a nice "little" 15 miler. Got my ass kicked on an uphill, but toughed it out. I have ALOT of work ahead of me :)

oh, and no worries, stem is staying put for now. Way too early to make any adjustments. for now I want to concentrate on getting the feel of just riding it.

That stem has some rise to it. Flipping it would drop the bars a few cm.

sosojeffcc 01-18-11 09:59 PM

Question for you guys with compacts. Are you guys staying on your big chainring when coming to a stoplight, or are you shifting to the small chainring? I find that my 50 ring is a little too tall to be able to accelrate quickly from a stoplight without crosschaining (2nd largest cog). To remedy, I need to drop to the 34 chainring at a stoplight, then shift to 50, which leads to a subsequent shift in the cogs to minimize the difference. Lot of extra shifting.

Am I just weak?
