Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Uh oh bought a scale, is weight weenie a disease??

Impulse buy today of a digital scale. So of course the first thing I did when I got home was weighed my bikes even though I was most curious about the wheels.

Here's what I found.

2000 LeMond Zurich 55cm - The Rolf Vector Comps wheels with Rolf Hubs, the skewers, cassette, tires, etc. weighed 1240 grams for the front and 1750 for the rear. Running an 9 speed Ultegra cassette and Conti GP 4000s on this one. The total bike weighed 21 lbs, 8.6 oz ready to go. This is with a heavy Brooks B17 Imperial saddle.

1999 Schwinn Circuit 54 cm - Mavic CXP 21 rims with Shimano 105 hubs, the skewers, 9 speed 105 cassette, tires, etc. weighed 1220 grams and 1690 for the rear. The total bike weighed 22 lbs 3 oz with a Selle San Marco saddle on it.

2001 Trek Madone 5.9 mutant bike 56 cm - This bike has the lower end components from the 2010 Madone 4.5, the frame was a warranty replacement. Bontrager SSR wheels with Bontrager Race Lite Hard Case tires, skewers, 10 speed cassette, etc. Front weighed in at 1460 grams and the rear at 1980. The total bike weighed 19 lbs 8.6 oz. with a heavy Brooks B17 saddle on it.

I think a set of Rob's wheels with some Conti GP 4000 s tires and a lighter modern saddle ( if I can find a comfortable one) should get me close to 17 lbs for the Trek bike without any durability issues.

Then for fun I just went out and weighed my winter bike. A 2008 Raleigh Mojave 8.0 equipped with full fenders, lights, studded snow tires, rear rack, and trunk bag packed with necessities. It weighed over 42 lbs! No wonder it takes me so long to get my 20 miles in on it.

I wished I had a scale, but only long enough to figure out how much my bike weighs. I have a brand new Madone 6.2 H2 and can not find out how much it weighs. Wish Trek would post at least the nominal weights.

I know, they match the owner!! I figure it's easier and much cheaper to trim the weight off of me right now. A tad over 50 lbs since this time last year. If my bikes lost that much weight they'd be invisible!!

I think it is a disease, i have a good case of it right now. Anyone know how good the inexpensive hanging scales are on ebay, yeah its cheap but if its not accurate whats the point. Looked at the park tool scale but don't want to spend $40 some odd dollars just for that.

If you scale doesn't give weights in grams, you couldn't possibly be a weight weenie

When first into cycling, people said to get Brooks saddles. I now have an all CF Fizik K1 that weighs a whole lot less and is every bit as comfortable. What's with Brooks?

Uh oh, just got back from picking up a used Fizik saddle to see if it can replace my one Brooks on the Trek.

B17 special @ 540 g Fizik Aliante K:IUM @ 239 g = a savings of 301 g.

Just happened to see the ad and picked it up. If it doesn't work I can just resell it.

It actually a digital scale for weighing fish that I picked up on a whim at Sportsmen Warehouse. I got one that measured up to 50 lbs since I knew our mountain bikes were fairly heavy. They had 15lb and 25lb scales also. Prices from $15 to $50.

The scale has both english and metric, a large hood that fits over my steel frames, or the bikes wheels, and it has memory to store info.

Well, right now the saddle is on my LeMond. The Trek won't see the roads until at least March as there is too much corrosive crap on our roads during the winter. The LeMond was being used as a commuter before I bought it so it's already been subjected to bad weather and is the only road bike I use this time of year. And that's only if the roads are clear of ice and snow.

That's a nice scale but reading to 0.01 lb will never do for a true weight weenie. 0.01 lb is 4.5 gm !!! That's like totally a lot of weight, man.
