Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SuperSix Confusion!

Ok, so I stopped by my LBS today totally ready to pull the trigger on a SuperSix 4... and then I saw the frame in person for the first time. It just seemed like it was poorly constructed, the stickers were peeling off and the "protective" plastic stickers that were attached to the chainstay seemed unlikely to stay where they should. The frame was rough looking (yes I know it is raw carbon) and just didn't seem like it would be very resilient. Am I over thinking this? Should I just stop looking at the tiny little details and take the plunge or look to another bike? Any Supersix owners want to add anything?

Yeah I hear you. I was looking at a SuperSix Hi-Mod and the reflectors looked like they were going to fall right off. I can't imagine those things staying on when I really got those wheels up to speed.

Yeah, ok, so I might be fixating on stuff that doesn't matter. I guess I expect them to finish it a little bit better.

When you say they, you may be talking about the LBS. I'm not sure who puts those on. Either way, the LBS should fix that. Mine are stuck on like stickers and haven't moved.

I agree about the reflectors. Mine keep sliding down and hitting the dork ring. I lose at least 40 watts when that happens.

I doubt they're load-bearing stickers -- you should be ok.

kleinboogie, you are satisfied with the build quality of the SS? Did you get a clear coated frame or a matte frame?

Raw structural carbon is going to look rough - building strong components doesn't always lend itself to being pretty. This is why most carbon bikes use an outer cosmetic weave that doesn't add much to the structure but looks prettier. I don't know if the SuperSix has one or not, but for comparison find a specialized shop and look at the various Tarmac/Roubaix models. The lower end bikes have 'neat' carbon waves, while the high end ones not so much. Leaving it out cuts a few more grams off the frame.

Yeah, I have ridden the Tarmac and Roubaix, but I didn't know the weave was cosmetic. I knew what raw carbon should look like, I just didn't realize that weaving process was to make it look pretty. I guess I am just trying to make sure I make a decision on a bike that will take me many thousand miles. I am not really planning on spending another $2500 plus in 3 or 4 years on a new frameset.

That's because you're not going fast enough. If you dial it up to 400 watts, the reflectors will slide outward towards the rim.

I have a matte black SS3 and it has none of the issues you mention - go to another shop or have your LBS show you another

Awesome post! I almost got a CAAD10 until I noticed the fragile dork disk and dirty bar tape. What's up with that?

Sucks when expensive frames have glaring cosmetic issues. I was looking at a brand new Colnago Master X Light and the small bit they paint near the FD braze on was totally botched. They went over onto the rest of the braze on tab. $2500+ for the frame and they screw it up.

What???

I am the proud owner of a SS4 and I have no idea what you are talking about.

First off, we are roadies, take the reflectors off. They are poorly constructed because it is a high end race bike and Cannondale isn't going to waste money on something 99% of the users will throw away. Who rides with those anyway??

Secondly, I don't know what stickers you are talking about... Protective stuff? All mine has is a chainstay protector by the big rings. Sounds like something your LBS put on and they messed up.

I absolutely love my SS and would not change my mind on it for anything. It rides beautifully and is a great machine.

The clear sticker on the chainstay is put on by the LBS, but sometimes at the factory too. Just ask them to put on a new one if it's not on correctly. As far as the weave goes, my Tarmac SL3 shows numerous places where the weave isn't orderly and pleasing to the eye, but it just makes me love it more. These bikes are all about getting down to business. Looking pretty is secondary (but I think it's prettier that way).

Now that's what I'm talking about! Why is this dude still riding with them on anyway!?

I have a Super Six High Mod. It's perfect.

WTF. Is there a Super Six 'High Mod' that's lighter CF, and a Super Six non-High Mod that weighs 150 grams more? Why don't I know the answer to this question after going to the Cannondale website?
