Knee Pain
About four months ago I was in a bike crash and only had lots of road rash (nothing broken). After I healed (1 month), I began on my normal rides again.
Now, I have developed this knee pain on the outside part of my right knee (where your LCL is located). I had an MRI done and the doctor said my knee is normal and just to take some Aleve before I go out riding. I did that and it helped some, but what the hell is causing this knee pain? It happens after about 20 miles into the bike ride. I am around 30 years old and in great health. The only thing I can think of next is to go spent the $250.00 and get professionaly fit to my bike (as the local bike shop said to do). What do you guys think? Has this happen to you and what did you do to heal it? |
Get the fit done.

Get fitted.

A fit wouldn't hurt. I'd guess (I'm not a doctor) that the most common lateral knee pain problem is from ITBS (iliotibial band syndrome). I've been suffering lateral knee pain myself recently, and minimal effort with lots of stretching has done wonders.

I used to get ITBS when I run and good stretching does wonders. It's alabout that tendon moving over the bone.

It could be Random Old Age Ache and Pain Syndrome coming on early. A while back, my left knee was developing a little pain, on the last 200k, my right knee started hurting about halfway through and got worse as I rode. In both cases, the problem just went away by itself.
While these might be due to bike fit, my bike and I have been the same size for the last 18 months, so it doesn't fit any different now than it did a month ago. If it was something torn up in my knee, it sure wouldn't have fixed itself in a week. So who knows? |
I have osgood-schlatter disease and my knee below the kneecap gets sore on long, climby rides after I take a break from exercising and come back. Goes away with time...

Nothing to add- just wanted to say that's a good looking dog in your avatar. I've got to two boxers myself!
Oh, and get fitted. |

My knee pain was actually was my calf. Now I'm in PT fixing it up.

Is it possible that your on-the-bike position was changed by the crash?
If the saddle got moved, for instance, it can affect how your knee tracks, and how it feels. Even a little change there can make a big difference sometimes. OR maybe how you were injured has affected the mechanics of your fit, with similar results. Or both. I'd think a good fitting would help in either case... |
I got it!!!
It was ITBS!!! I did some exercises and took a Motrin and the issue went away.
Next I am going to stop taking the Motrin and do more exercises. Thanks for all your help I was really bumming over this.:thumb: |
If it comes back dont ignore it - it can be a real issue if it takes hold. Another tip: Get a foam roller, can be very effective against ITBS and has done wonders for me.
