Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

has anyone disassembled a Look Keo pedal?

I'm looking at this on ebay: https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=220687876697

they're Ti spindles for Look pedals. claimed 44g weight savings. so for $55 i would be making my Keo Max (260g-->216g) lighter than the Keo Blade (227g).

I can't find any directions on how the pedals come apart, what tools are involved, what types of grease should be used, etc.

anyone know how to do it?

The pedal's axle-retention collar can be removed with an 18mm 12-point box-end wrench, and it's reverse-threaded on the driveside pedal. Once the collar's unthreaded from the pedal body, the axle and bearings come out as an assembly.

I haven't disassembled the axle assembly further, I'm usually just replacing the ones that are under recall by Look. I see the seller has his email address listed for those with technical questions, so you might send him an email asking if he has a quickie guide to the rest of the process.

Thanks. Yes, I emailed the guy but that seems simple enough.

What kind of grease do you use?

The pedal's bearings are pre-greased by Look, and I just dose their exteriors with Sta-Lube New-Generation Lithium, which is a transparent amber lithium-based grease we use at the LBS.

Zinn's guide to Road Bike Maintenance has "blown-up" diagrams for rebuilding most of the common pedals. It might be worth checking it out.

I found some more details.

I believe the Max and Blade use an 18mm box wrench
and the Classic and Sprint use a proprietary adapter
