Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

have one, and with earbuds i can listen to an audiobook without too much of an issue. It is louder, but the road like feel (and hence a small part of my sanity) are worth it.

I like the idea, but you have to wonder why they didn't go with fluid resistance.

I've tried it in person before, it's loud -- REALLY loud. I didn't think it felt that much like real road either.

What are you comparing the road feel to? In other words, can you compare it to say a Cycleops fluid 2, or a Kurt Kinetic?

My buddy has one; it's not that bad. It's louder than my Kurt but not so bad that you want to kill yourself or anything.

Cyclingnews did a review on this a little while back and had two guys side by side...they could not talk to each other. They also made a comment to avoid this device if you live in a multi-family (apartment or condo) dwelling. You will make no friends.

Wind trainers are so 80's...

yep.

I live in an apartment, which makes it unfriendly to neighbors.
But i also live with my fiancee, and it wouldn't be fair to her.
and on a third level, if i'm going to go on the trainer, I want to have music or TV going. I wouldn't be able to hear it over the racket.

That device has been getting a LOT of press lately. Have seen reviews of it everywhere, and surprisingly, mostly good.

I however, would absolutely hate that noise. I already can push the KK hard enough that it's pretty loud, and I'd bet that fan is 3x louder than a KK. I don't care how 'roadlike' it feels - I'll pass.

Pretty friggin' expensive, too.

I think it's a fine idea. not having to bother with a "trainer wheel" and tire is a plus. If they had paired it with a centrifugal resistance unit (and not wind) i'd be into it.

My guess is they will either develop their own fluid resistance unit, or perhaps partner with someone to bolt their unit to it.

I would love to see a Kurt/Lemond agreement where you see the Kurt style resistance unit with a big honking flywheel on it, on a Revolution frame. Perhaps give it a slightly wider base. After that, I think it would be a practically perfect trainer.

Here's the review from Cyclingnews...watching television is impossible...

https://www.cyclingnews.com/reviews/p...lution-trainer

Some are mentioning wheels and tires....I save my old tires and use them for the trainer. Once a rear is squared off from road use, I put it on my trainer wheel. After that I don't care if it wears out. I have an old Shimano wheel I use for the trainer...the price of this and the noise level and the outdated technology (wind) are the reasons we passed on being a distributor. Tried it....it's ridiculously noisy. The fan is a foot in diameter.

...another review I read said it's as loud as a vacuum cleaner.

According to a Lemond employee on slowtwitch they have no intention of coming out with a fluid version. He claims they spent a lot of time making the feel match the road and feel they couldn't replicate with a fluid version.

The only benefit I see to the wind trainer is the resistance doesn't vary with heat buildup. Since I don't see that as an issue if you use a powermeter I don't see any reason to get one. My KK doesn't wear out the tires I use.

I'm guessing compains like Cyclops and Kurt are not lining up to partner with a guy who has the annoying habit of suing pretty much every business partner he ever had. Maybe Mr. Lemons can market this gem to hearing impaired people and cyclists who live near the airport.

Having to mess with a greasy chain every time I want to put my bike on and off the trainer is no big deal. Jet engine noise coming from my trainer is a deal breaker. Maybe Gregg should include free ear plugs with this trainer.

True but you have to buy a cassette to go with it.

That's funny, I was looking at the same video last night because I was also looking for this trainer. I think I'm gonna get a Kurt Kinetic Rock n Roll. I'm just sick of the sound from my cycleops mag trainer.

I have been on the lemond trainer for about 1-2 months now. I like it a lot, and yes, it is pretty loud. Makes watching movies a pain, but you kind of get used to it. I try to use it before midnight and try to be considerate of my neighbors. I live in nyc, in an apartment, with units on all sides of me. No one has complained yet.

I compared the lemond side-by-side with a cycleops fluid, the feel is night and day. Much much better feel on the lemond. The cycleops felt like riding through mud compared to the lemond. I recommend it if you can get over the noise issue. The noise is also relative to how much power you are putting down, so it's possible that the nosie is more bearable to me because I am not putting down that much power.

Rode one of the LeMonds in a LBS and man it is loud when you push hard, but not so much if you don't. Bought a KK Road Machine and am really glad I went in that direction.... that noise would be unbearable.

Edit: I do trainer rides with a group twice a week and if I brought that noisy thing I'm sure I would be kicked off the island pretty fast. Six or seven of us riding fluid and mag trainers together do not make near that much racket. Imagine a room full of those things!
