Newbie Etiquette

I'm new to cycling and I'm still just trying to get a grip on how big this sub-culture is. It's humbling to know that there are so many others, all with people just as passionate as the people I'm finding here, that I'll never even know about, let alone get to explore.

I've got my bike, gloves and helmet, which is all I need to get started. I'm already in love. I'm looking into clothes and found http://cyclingdeal.com. My question may seem a bit naive. Most combos have team jerseys. What's the etiquette on wearing a team jersey?

tl;dr: Is wearing a team jersey looked down upon when you're not on the team?

Pretty much everything you do will be looked down upon by someone.

superflylondon 02-04-11 04:37 PM

Wear whatever you feel like and feel comfortable. You'll get some remarks some good some bad from people here about wearing team kits...etc. If your a guy who likes to wear a jersey to "support the team" than go for it. I don't own any pro jersey's but have been known to put a KOM bottle into my cage.

I'll have to add that I do think wearing a world champion or other leaders jersey and not actually ever been a champion is tacky. But who really who cares what others think. High school is over....for most of us.

ScoJo 02-04-11 04:38 PM

Wear whatever you want.

Not really. It's just like all these people around where I'm at that wear Lakers jerseys. It's just a show of support for your favorite team. Or maybe it's that you like the outfit and it matches your bike? lol!! Some people call that being a Fred, but all honestly, who cares? Wear what you want.:thumb:

ScottStr 02-04-11 04:49 PM

At over 300 pounds, I refuse to wear a yellow jersey. I'll never lead the TDF. I try to always hold myself to a higher standard of behavior than I hold others to. I do make fun of the guy who was wearing only a pair of knit cotton shorts rolled up at the legs and down at the waist to turn it into a thong. I also laughed at the guy I saw wearing a Team Liquigas outfit that was so baggy it hung several inches below his crotch.
With those exceptions, wear what you want.

Thanks all. Just curious.
I get the 'who cares what people think' aspect but after going to England and flashing what Americans call a "Peace sign" (a mistake I'll only make once), I try not barge into unexplored territory without knowing some guidelines.

Any no-nos?

I don't think it stops at high school, and neither are we all immune to it. That's why we ride/buy the bikes we have: to be part of or not a part of a certain clique or stereotype. To each their own, of course.

Especially in this forum. Most of it is not personal and is meant in a jesting way.

Things like this are only looked down on BF--if you are out riding in real life you are way ahead of the game IMO.

You my friend, have come to the right place for opinions..They are in abundance here...I don't have one on your uniform though...I do know that PCAD wears a pink uniform and he is quite popular here...

HMF 02-04-11 05:17 PM

One of these days I'll get a picture of the kid who wears an aero helmet with his street clothes and cycling shoes. Don't do that.

That's not the word choice I would have used...

The wonderful thing about PCADs
Is PCADs are wonderful things
Their tops are made out of rubber
Their bottoms are made out of springs
They're bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy
Fun, fun, fun, fun, FUN!
But the most wonderful thing about PCADs
Is he's the only one

The wonderful thing about PCADs
Is PCADs are wonderful chaps
They're loaded with vim and with vigor
They love to leap in your laps
They're bouncy, trouncy, flouncy pouncy
Fun, fun, fun, fun, FUN

PCADs are wonderful fellahs.
PCADs are awfully sweet.
Everyone elses is jealous,

This should get you up to speed ;)

I don't mind. Just don't draft anyone on the ARBT without at least saying hi and offering to take a pull.

Oh, that's brilliant, but remember: Two fingers up, palm facing away from you (towards the recipient) = Peace (or, two); Two fingers up, palm facing towards you = F you (in the UK).

As for clothing, going to +1 all that say wear what you want...just know that cycling shorts/bibs are black for a reason...

On the larger scale, wear what's comfortable and won't leave you soaked with sweat (not too much of a problem these days, but trust me: Some day, it will warm up) - that can be either the aforementioned team kits, or gym shorts and shirts made of high tech fabrics.

Yes, there are some folks that will look down on you. But, FWIW, they were going to probably look down on you anyway for no good reason other than the fact that you're not them. This also applies to the cycling world.

Now...go out and ride...and stop offending the British! :D
