road disc wheels?
I am looking to find a road wheelset with disc hubs. I have seen that Velocity makes a disc hub and bontrager has a set also. Are there any other options out there premade? I have a set of mtb disc wheels I could rob the hubs from and lace them to some new rims but that's a last resort.
Thanks yall. |
How narrow of a rim are you looking for? What width tires do you want to run?
|
The largest that will clean on the frame/fork would be 30c max, I am not a pro on rim widths but I have a pair of alex dc19's that have 32c's and are 16.3mm.

Nothing? Tough crowd.

There just isn't much out there. I'm guessing you'll need 130mm hubs? Those are even more rare. I'm thinking of switching my cross bike from canti to disc and it has a rear spacing of 132.5 to accommodate both road and mtn hubs. I plan on using 29er wheels for mine.
The Bontrager wheels are about the closest out there for road use that I've found and they aren't cheap. |
There are some road-disc hubs out there, but most I have seen are mountain hubs laced to road rims. It depends on what you need I guess. What spacing do you have for the rear hub? Ask member Racer Ex if his are still for sale. I believe he was selling a set of Alex rims laced to Shimano disc hubs, but the rear is a mountain hub.

What spacing are you looking for?
I think if you have 130mm spacing the velocity would be your best bet. If 135mm spacing, there are pretty much endless options. Your rim doesn't care what your hub spacing is (well it does, but 135mm hubs work with standard road rims). I have an xt disc hub (135 spacing) going to a mavic a719 rim. I really like them. I could've used an open pro if I wanted, or any other. Biggest limiter is the spacing you want to run. |
ya the spacing is 132.5. so does that mean using a mountain hub won't be a big deal? Also, would buying a 29er wheelset work for this?
|
Yes you can use 135 hubs, yes you can use a 29er wheel, but pick one with a narrow, cross country rim width.
Alternately to run narrower than 28s, have someone lace you your preferred set of road rims to a set of mountain disc hubs. XT are fine though heavy. Don't know your needs or budget. |
I have a winter beater cross bike that I built up on a Motobecane Fantom Outlaw frame. I originally bought Vuelta road disc wheels for it, but they're too narrow for my winter tires so I built up a set of wheels using the Velocity hubs and Velocity AVC disc-only rims.
I like my custom wheels better because they're much more versatile in the variety of tires I can use with them. |

The wheels will be used on a Traitor Ruben which is a cross/commuter bike but I will be using it as a bike to do a tour on this summer. and the budget is minimal but I just had a thought that I could use the rims from my fixed gear and the hubs from my mountain bike and have mutant used wheels but they would be free (if the spokes fit). Is there anything wrong or bad about this idea?
