Sore nipples

Hi guys

After a little bit of advice of you roadies.

When out on the road at the minute I am just wearing a full length base layer top made with merino wool under my cycling jacket. Lately though my nipples have started to become sore from rubbing base layer I think .

Do you guys have any tips of how to stop this such as putting sellotape or plasters on?

Wear something else. Or try dabbing some Vaseline on 'em. That helped my sensitive nips after I first had them pierced.... but really, if it seems that the new clothing rubbing on them is what's bothering you, the easiest and most long term solution would be to just not wear whatever is causing the pain.

Do sport bras help?

jamesdak 02-10-11 01:44 PM

Lube is the key, chamios lube, aquaphor, etc. In my past days of long distance running it could also become a problem sometimes. I've even resulted to chapstick before. I've never really had the problem biking and much less often running one I switched to better wicking shirts.

I wear a very thin and light jersey which is specifically designed as a base layer. No problems at all

rankin116 02-10-11 01:49 PM

You could just try a bandaid.

sbxx1985 02-10-11 01:51 PM

Pasties.

nearly as many replies to this thread as there are views, awesome. Lube up them nippos!

Marauder9 02-10-11 01:54 PM

Never thought of vaseline or lube.

It doesnt really get to the point of being really painfull. I am just trying to stop it before it gets too uncomfortable.

Velo - I might ask my wife for a bra to see if that helps. Cant quite get the picture out of my head her reaction though :roflmao:

Thanks all

I just use my assos chamois cream on them for long rides (the menthol is slightly exhilarating). Haven't had any problems since I started wearing Craft or Castelli mesh layers as the ultimate base layer. I wear them throughout the year.

foresthill 02-10-11 02:15 PM

Wool seems great for warmth and wicking, but maybe not as a base layer?

Well...if you wear her sports bra, you'll need to stuff it a bit (I assume) and then you'll have to starting getting the reaction of your riding buddies out of your head!

Honestly though...on longer rides I'll put a little Butt Buttr on my nips so they don't chaffe. I did my first ride of 2011 last weekend with bibs...34 miles..didn't protect my nips and they were pretty damn sore for a day or two.

Body Glide!

I started using this as a runner; it has the same active ingredients and feels the same as chamois glide, so I imagine they are the same. I put it any where I have ever had chafing and I have not had a problem, including the nips.

I know people who do the bandaide routine, there are specific nipple shields you can get a running stores. i think that lube will just leave spots on your jersey that will look like wet spots. i wear a compression top that fits and wears like a second skin under my jersey and it eliminates all rubbing.

Just let them get calloused.

No, you can never un-imagine that.

Wool is AWSOME as a base layer.

OP- Try Bag Balm. Very effective.

I used to do marathons. That actually happens.

Jed19 02-10-11 06:21 PM

I am kinda confused. Are your baselayers skintight? I ask, b/cos that is how they are supposed to fit. I never ride without a baselayer, and I have never experienced this phenomenon.

Of course, I don't have any merino baselayer.

M_FactorX19 02-10-11 06:27 PM

are you pregnant? thats what my wife thinks is wrong..

Marauder9 02-15-11 02:09 AM

Merino wool baselayers were recomended in a bike magazine.
I have to say as a base layer they are 1st class as keep me nice and warm and after a long ride one of their main advantages is they dont smell of sweat quite as bad.

Yes

Thanks for all your suggestions guys and I will try and make sure I dont get pregnant so my nips dont get worse :)

+1 When I ran long distance in high school I did this.

EddieH 02-15-11 06:34 AM

Just have them removed. They serve no purpose.

sci_femme 02-15-11 06:55 AM

Some folks are allergic to wool. Well, not the fiber itself, but the lanolin residue. Find some lanolin-based cream/ointment and test on yourself in inconspicuous spot.....

Good Luck

Here I thought this was going to be about wheels....

Body Glide. I have used it off and on for a few years as needed for this and it works...almost like it was designed for it. Imagine that.
