Q: where to get old school 5/6 speed cassette?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Q: where to get old school 5/6 speed cassette?

Hi all,

as the title says, I am in search of old school rear cassette, 5 or 6 speeds. Any ideas? I have tried major online stores but to no avail.

Thanx!
Alex

I don't think there is such a thing as 5 or 6 speed cassette. We used freewheels back then.

Hm, thats new for me! What do you mean freewheels? Do I buy 5 freewheels and somehow stack them next to each other onto the axle?

How do I go about this?

Thanx

Maybe you could give some description of what you have, and what you're trying to accomplish.

If it's 5 or 6 speed it must be a threaded freewheel. Try posting at the Classic & Vintage forum, lots of knowledge there.

6 speed cassettes do exist. Shimano first version of the freehub used 6 speed, Uniglide was the name.
If you read the Sheldon Brown link I gave you will find them.

As above, I suspect you are looking for a freewheel rather than a cassette.

Give us more details and we can give you better directions.

In general I have found Ebay to be very helpful for NOS or gently used freewheels.

PS if you are looking for 6 speed make sure you know your spacing, there is "standard" 6 and "ultra-6," the ultra is closer spaced.....again if you can give us more details on what you have and what you need we can likely be more helpful.

To give you an answer, your rear hub is most likely English threaded.

In which case you buy them on eBay. The end.

Yeah. Sure s*cks to be so "old" to not be familiar with "cassettes" or think that more than six cogs in back is excessive. Heck, back-in-the-day I thought seven speed "ultra freewheels" were a joke and now I come to find out that Campy recently introduced an 11 cog cassette thingy and Shimano has electronic shifters. Shades of Star Trek! What's next?
