It's a bike. Not a television. It's not your Ipod. It's not your laptop. It's a tool/toy whatever you want to call it. It's going to get scratched. Maybe a minor scratch, maybe a huge scratch. Big deal? A scratched bike looks ridden... pristine bikes are conversation pieces.

The first scratch sucks, but the resultant scars are good for conversation.

Crashing while not racing or riding in a pack should be very rare. I also have crashed 2 times....in 40 years of cycling. Both times were from road hazards but were my fault from inattention. Regarding the real question, does one get upset at the blemishing of a pristine new bike-yup I do but I almost welcome the blemishes as a way to dispense with that inital dread of the event. I have owned 6 bikes in my life, all very well used. The 2 I own now, a Freschi from 1976 and a Merlin Lunaris from 2005, are both immaculate but both have their share of well earned scratches. The beauty is still there, the function of each remains sweet and clean. My Freschi came with the typical mid 70's crap paint job that started flaking off in one season. In 86 I could not stand the rust so I shipped it off to CycleArt in Cali for a custom paint job that remains beautiful to this day. As far as replacing parts no, I would not replace them until the function was shot.

Not true. One of my crashes was on a perfect, smooth, flat, straight road with no traffic. The problem- I had just purchased a new garmin and I was so enthralled with the screen data that I rode through the end of the road into a snow drift. My mistake- 3 crashes- but the latter I discounted as I went into a plile of fluffy snow with no damage save a blemished ego.
