Online Wheelbuilding Sites

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Online Wheelbuilding Sites

Has anyone used any of the online websites that build custom wheels? Saw a good pair on Prowheelbuilder.com, and they have some higher-end ones on Wheelbuilder.com.

Is one better than the other? I haven't heard much about either, so this was the first place I thought of.

Thanks!

I've heard only good things about wheelbuilder. I bought a wheel cover from them and it all went smooth.

Around here, psimet is the golden name, but he has some long wait times since he only does it part time and is in demand. I got a pair of wheels from him last winter, and I'll say they were much cheaper than wheelbuilder for the same thing and very well built.

I bought a nice wheelset from Wheelbuilder.com and was extremely satisfied. Excellent customer service, easy to get a hold of, responsive, knowledgeable staff, top notch wheel build. Highly recommend.

Although I build my own wheels, I often buy spokes from wheelbuilder.com (they're on the way home from my wife's work). Very nice people, and good prices.

I bought my current set of custom wheels from bicyclewheelwarehouse.com. They don't get talked about as much here as they used to be, but I had a very positive experience and can wholeheartedly recommend them. The wheel build was top quality and they're still holding true under my fat ass almost 18 months later.

I am in the process of talking to Psimet right now about my next set of wheels. I don't have anything in hand from him yet, and probably won't until Summertime, but based on his reputation and our first round of emails, I expect an equally great set of wheels.

I know lots of people that have had wheels built by Wheelbuilder and only have heard good things. I have been to the shop a few times with friends picking up their wheels too. Also they build many wheels for pro teams and riders. I might be getting a set built with a PT soon if I can swing it financially.

Wheelbuilder built my PowerTap SL+ (rear) / DT Swiss 240S (front), with DT Swiss Aerolite spokes and RR1.2 rims back in 2009. Very satisfied. I opted for the expedited service and had it in my hands in a week. Since they're in CA the tax sucks but oh well.

Had no idea you were that close to him. Next time you drop in mention that I want to sell his covers. I had another customer drop him that line, but I'm serious.

Despite intentions to, I actually haven't set foot in their store yet... just my wife. Also, her work just lost its lease, so I'm not sure how far they're going to move next month. If I ever get around to visiting them (they're about 45 minutes away, barring traffic) I'll be sure to drop them the line.

I've had a wheel built up through prowheelbuilder.com. All in all it was a good experience. It came in at exactly the claimed weight, the price was better than most but it did arrive a little later than I was originally told.

Wheelbuilder has a great reputation though,

Last summer I had some wheels built by valleycyclist.com. I have been very happy with them; staying true, no issues at all. They were also very fast and great email communication.
