The true meaning of HTFU

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A wood splinter going straight through your calf seems pretty hard man

I'm sure I would have no problem riding a few yards with a splinter like that in my leg especially if a podium position in The World Championships was there for the taking.

and not show any sign of "weakness" by acknowledging that you're hurt? That dude has heart... if he were a "baby" he would have rolled over and quit, then cried and complained that he was dealt a crappy hand.

Really?
Did you see both sides of the "splinter"?
Are you Chuck Norris?

That's not a splinter, that's a friggan' stick... Or at least a piece of kindling, but not a splinter.

That guy must have titanium balls, for serious.

That is bad-ass. Football players come off the field when they twist an ankle...this guy got stabbed through the leg and STILL placed 3rd. Finished the race with a spear in his calf. That is the very definition of HTFU! Not to mention the nasty road-rash on his hip. This guy could have just gone straight to the hospital and he'd still be pretty tough...but getting back on the bike like that...I am impressed.

Admittedly, he only got third because the nunzio ran to the finish line without his bike and got DQ'd.

Jus' saying. Doesn't take away from the badassery or anything.

That is what the story should be named: "Cyclist finishes race with spear through leg"

Splinter does not do that man justice.

I would love to see the video of this race...not that I like gore, but there's a big crash, one guy finishes by picking up his bike and running and another guy with a wooden spear in his leg. That is an awesome race.

exactly! I don't consider a 7.8" piece of wood through the calf a "splinter"

Ye gods.

Hell - I need to recover from just looking at that! I hope, in addition to third place, they gave him some sort of extra award, something like the "Stainless Steel Balls of Brass" award, or something.

Now, whenever I hear folks talking about how wimpy they think cyclist are with the shaved legs and the Lycra and all, I'll just show them this picture.
