Might end up being a 2nd shooter at the TOC

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Might end up being a 2nd shooter at the TOC

Hey all,

A friend of mine is a professional photog and also hosts Graham Watson's website. Whenever Graham can't make a race for whatever reason, if it's here in the states he asks Will to do it. Will has photographed the last 3 TOC's for Graham, and is going to shoot the next one as well. I had dinner with him the other night, and he said his normal 2nd shooter might not be able to make it, and if so asked if I'd like to go. Heh - what do you think my answer was?

You'd do it for free?

I would. Well, if my expenses were covered.

We haven't talked money yet because the other guy hasn't said for sure he won't do it, but the way Will is I'm sure expenses would be covered. It sounds like a brutal amount of work, but at least one time would be awesome for the experience.

It's not nearly as much fun as you might think/expect. I assume you'll be on a moto and if that's the plan make sure to bring a helmet and some moto pants. 70-200/2.8 should be your go to lens...good luck.

Understood. My friend says it's a lot of really long days. He'll probably be on the moto - from what I understand they only allow one moto per company. He'd probably designate places for me to shoot from during the race as well as help out with the before and after race shots.

In college, I was a photographer/photoeditor of our student paper. I shot nearly all home games and frequently traveled with the football and hockey teams to games. While it was fun at first, it quickly became a chore.

GL getting the gig. btw, do you have some samples of your work? If you don't, maybe it's time to get some to make your friends decision a little easier.

I don't shoot as a main gig anymore, although I still do work from time to time from referrals and former clients. My website got deleted due to a snafu with GoDaddy. I need to re-upload it. Until then I've just been using my Zenfolio account (located in my signature). It's worked out ok so far. My friend is familiar with my work and specifically my cycling work.

Cool. I'm checking them out. I didn't see the links since I block signatures. GL

Map your route carefully...getting from the start to a good shooting point and to the finish in time for all 3 is no small feat if you're doing it on your own/without race official help...unless it's a crit.

Whatever you do, don't waste any time chatting up the Podium Girls and certainly don't post any pictures of them here.

And yeah, it sounds like a great experience even if it's a lot of work.

Sounds like you may need a schlepper/coordinator. Somebody free and very willing. Can I send you a resume and some photo samples?

If he's credentialed, he won't have a problem with access to the route. There are several media vehicles (car and moto) in the caravan.

It's NOT a chore until you've done three or four of them. The week goes by so fast, your head spins. Then you're left with a Tour hangover for a few weeks.

It'll be Ravenmore's best week of the year.

Just don't fall off the motorcycle. If you're lucky it will be an ST1300 like mine. Perfect press bike.

Thanks - yeah, I haven't shot a pro bike race before but I kind of know what I'm in for. Shoot an 8 hour wedding sometime. I'm completely exhausted afterwards. I'm sure this will be even more hectic. my friend is shooting for some of the teams, so we might be getting on team buses and what not, so I might have a chance to chat with some really cool people. Hope the other dude flakes...

I'm already familiar with your work. (the stuff in your sig is incredible). If I get invited and can't go I'll throw your name into the hat, although I have a buddy here in Austin who is ahead of ya.
