Death Valley Century -- Questions

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Death Valley Century -- Questions

Hi all. I am doing the DV century at the end of Oct. I have done this ride 2 years in a row and it's a fantastic ride.

My question is:
I am traveling from the Bay Area, I usually go through Yosemite (120) over the Tioga Pass and down 395.

Due to the recent storms they shut down 120 at the Tioga pass.

I am guessing that I'll have to go down 99 or 5 and then up through Bakersfield.

I took the time off work to make this a 4 day vacation, I don't know if there are any sight or things to do on the way to Bakersfield.

Does anyone know of anything to make this trip a little more worthwhile other than just sitting on the freeway?

Anyone else doing this ride??
