Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Another bike recommendation thread...

Hi,

I am new to the forum but have been lurking for a while. I am looking at purchasing a new bike for myself. Right now I am thinking of either a Cervelo R3 with Ultegra and upgraded wheels or a Guru Photon with Ultegra and upgraded wheels. The bikes will roughly cost same after taxes here in Canada approx $5600.

Both bikes will be fitted correctly and are quite comfortable.

Please let me know what you would recommend or which one of these bikes you would choose?

Thanks in advance.

I'd go Guru because they are less common and every interaction with Cervelo has left me wanting to blow something up - it is a really nice bike though. I'd make the decision based on which bike you'd rather get it on with...

I don't have experience with either one, but you are the one that is going to ride it. Pick whichever one feels the best when you ride. Also, if one really works for you aesthetically, go for that one. My jaw just about hit the ground when my LBS wheeled out my new bike the first time. It looked so much better in person than on paper.

I vote guru, although realistically you will be happy with either. I'm surprised you don't want a bike with dura-ace or sram force/red for that price. Tons of top-of-the-line bikes for under 6 thousand. Then again Gurus are rare.

I can get force for the same price but i prefer the ultegra for the stiffness of the cranks.

@captnfantastic what other bikes in that price range do you recommend?

Are they both from the same LBS? If not which dealer are you most comfortable with. If the same LBS then go with the one that looks the best as you have already thrown comfortable out of the equation with them both being comfortable.

I love my Cervelo but don't know much about Gurus, I think you can get a custom fit Guru?

I also wonder what the price difference is for Dura- Ace and the weight saving?

you've told us so much about your current experience level, riding style, fitness, and intended use for the bike that the answers you get will be just peoples initial thought, without any real reasoning, so : get the red one.
