Helmets Work!
2 Attachment(s)
I crashed yesterday, 30mph on a downhill S-curve. Knocked me unconscious, broke my collarbone, and got a good case of road-rash. My Bell Furio took the heap of crash energy for my head. I'm not concussed, X-rays and CT scan show all is OK.
Maybe even knocked some sense into me... Hope this reinforces good safety for you. |
Ouch, hope you're feeling much better now.
|
Glad to hear you're okay. Now get a new helmet, climb back on that bike, and go ride.
|
You should be wearing full face helmets on the descents. 661 makes some good ones.

Just bought a new Giro Atmos because it looked cool. Hope it also protects my nogin in a crash.
|
if you were knocked unconscious how could you not get a concussion?
either way, glad to see the helmet did its job |
Never underestimate the usefulness of a good helmet.
How's the bike? |
Thanks for advice. I've got those around me keeping an eye out for me with a blow to the head.
The bike, 1986 Cannondale, had the stem turned about 30 deg left, and some torn handlebar tape, otherwise good-to-go. |
Glad you are ok. And yes you did have a concussion. I would not ride for a couple days just to be safe.
I had a great ride today, and on the way home I saw a road cyclist riding helmetless. I felt like yelling at him "Where's your helmet????" but decided it would not really help matters. |
Having stomped on an old helmet to break it before I threw it away, I just want to postulate that the amount of force it took to crunch your helmet like that would have really hurt badly if it hit your bare skull. Good thing it worked when you needed it. Take it easy for a while. :thumb:

Looks to me that helmet would still be good if you limit your next crash to landing on the right side of your head.

This helmet is going straight over the fireplace for your kids to see.

I crashed last week, very slow crash. I was riding over a patch of ice and the bike slid out from under me. I fell so slowly I anticipated my head hitting the ground and could feel the foam between my head and the road. Slid easily on the ice so there was no road rash or damage to my clothes. Left a small crack in my helmet right where my head and the pavement met. Already have a beautiful new helmet.
|
Yeah, I did an endo at slow speed. Still cracked the helmet. Slightly swollen jaw joint (underbite for a few days) and a touch of road rash but otherwise okay. The bike didn't fair so well: Bent fork, buckled downtube; stretched top tube.
|
Thank goodness you were wearing a helmet and it did it's job. Glad you're not any worse and people around you are keeping an eye on you. I had a slow speed crash a couple of months ago that broke my helmet and I was concussed. Heal quickly. Ride safe.

The helmet/no-helmet folks can argue all day long, but one thing we know for certain is that road-rash on your ear would be an absolute b!tch!
