Best Way to Sell Your Bike

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best Way to Sell Your Bike

If I'm interested in selling a higher end frame set, what's the best way to go about it?

What sort of disparity is there between what you'd ask on CL verses eBay?

Craigslist? eBay? Some other website?

You could always upgrade your membership for as low as $3 and try to sell it here.

True dat.
I've have great success selling stuff in the Marketplace forum.
And you're a lot less likely to get spammed and scammed like everytime I've listed stuff on CL.

find somebody that is looking for an upgrade and offer it to them first...

I sold my last bike to my brother. Zero hassle, told him what I wanted and he agreed to pay it. Even better for him, I didn't bother him for the $ until I actually found my new bike. Win-Win.

I'm going to try the marketplace forum, I didn't realize that it's so cheap to upgrade. I'd always thought it would've been far more.

I also spammed my teams' googlegroup page and CraigsList. If those don't work out, I suppose eBay is the last resort. I've never enjoyed the eBay system, I want to know where my beloved is going. Meet them, talk with them, see at least some of the excitement of "new-bike-day."

We'll see how things pan out.

*edited by lowcel but posted below with a way to link to your for sale listing.

Here's a link to the marketplace ad:
(mods feel free to delete my link if that sort of posting is against the spirit of the forum)
Linking to it in the thread is a no no but adding a link in your signature is perfectly fine and it allows it to be seen every time you post.

Also, thank you for upgrading your membership. It really is hard to beat for $3.

I've always had a problem with this.
If you're going to use BF to promote stuff, you should buy a membership for the privilege of doing so.

Thank you for understanding and best of luck with your sale. Also if it is a road bike it can be cross posted in both the regular market place and in the road market place to give it more exposure.

One of the main reasons is because if we started allowing it pretty much every "which bike should I buy thread" would be littered with "you should buy mine, here's a link" rather than actual advice towards which bike would be best for the poster.

Thanks guys,

Since this thread is about best ways to sell your bike, I figure I'll share what I've learned selling parts off CL and eBay.

Great photos are key, longer exposure, lower light. Something about that combination makes the part look "sexier" for those who are selling high end bits.

Also, the sooner you get them either on the phone or texting the easier the sale is. You put a human aspect into the "sale," something unfound in most internet purchases.

One other thing that I like to provide on sites that I don't have feedback or I am "known" is to include a link to my ebay feedback. I have 325 or so positives and have never received a neutral or a negative since I have been a member (over 10 years) so that generally helps to gain "trust" from the buyer.

What bothers you about it? Do you feel it detracts from the conversational/ community aspect of the forum and points more toward a marketplace website?

I'm not a fan of the 72 font BUY THIS **** signatures, but an unobtrusive line doesn't seem disruptive to the forum. At least, to me.

He isn't refering to your signature, he is refering to the member that he is quoting.
