Opinions of 105 9-speed components?
Hi everyone,
I am looking purchasing a used felt F80 with 105 components. This has the 9-speed group on the bike. I read somewhere that this is somewhat obsolete. Can someone explain why the newer 10-speed components are better and possibly why I should or should not worry about it?

Well, is your iPhone3 obsolete just because they made an iPhone4? Nope.
I believe it's Shimano's job to tell everyone that 9-speed is obsolete so that everyone will upgrade. But think about it, are they really saying that everything they made before this was junk? I hope not! :O
Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

In terms of functionality, 9 speed works fine. With the new 10 speed, there are design improvements that go beyond just adding a gear.
If the price is good enough, don't be afraid to buy.

Just upgraded from 9-speed 105 to 10-speed 105 on my main bike. It's an extra gear, and the shifting feels a bit smoother but nothing that really matters. I prefer the hood shape of the 10-speed. That's the biggest difference for me. Also I use a large cassette (11-28) so the extra gear in there really helps with the spacing.

9-speed will be around for a while... hell, 8-speed just got phased out completely.
It works just fine, and parts are cheaper than the current stuff.

I've got some 9 speed and 10 speed 105. As far as performance goes, it's a non issue.
