Silver hubs / silver hub wheelsets

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Silver hubs / silver hub wheelsets

Anyone still selling silver (let alone with a decent polish) hubs these days that don't demand my first born as payment?

I know of White Industries, and as far as I know Chris King isn't don't Campagnolo freehubs yet. Or am I going to be left fighting over NOS hubs on eBay again?

Basically I'm starting to collect parts, or at least a list of possible parts, for a custom steel frameset. I now have a full alloy Campagnolo Athena group (mix of 2010 and 2011 parts) and would like to add alloy hubs to the mix - not the loud graphics on top of black look that seems to be typical M.O. for companies these days. Thanks in advance.

I have done the same search recently for a new bike and there are not many good options, White Industries may be the only option for Campy 11. I saw the WI hubs last week at NAHBS and they are very slick and probably what I will go with despite the cost. Compass Bicycles imports some which look good, not sure if they will work with Campy 11 though: https://www.compasscycle.com/Hubs.html. I have heard that Suzue also makes a Campy compatible hub, Soma may sell them but I'm not sure.

The White hubs are really nice. They are about the same weight as Chris Kings but cost less. The Ti freehub body won't get damaged by cogs.
I have two sets and they have been flawless.

I also think that White Industries hubs have the nicest silver finish for a Campagnolo hub. Velocity standard road hubs are also available in Silver. There are several options for silver rims. The ones I like the best are Torelli Triumph rims (more commonly known as Ambrosio Excellence).

I have some non-branded polished silver hubs in 20/24H or 24/28H.

PM me for details.

valleycyclist, those rims look really nice. How do they compare to Open Pros in your opinion (those are my default rims these days)? Do they work well with wide-ish tires (26-28mm)?

They are similar to Open Pros in terms of having double eyelets, and the weight is also similar. The rim quality is very good. The Triumph rims have a slightly lower profile and they have a balance weight which offsets for the extra weight at the rim joint. I have never heard of any issues with eyelet cracks on them so far. They should be able to handle a 26-28mm tire, but I have never tried it.

I have silver Velocity hubs. No idea how they compare to the good stuff, but they have a few options in silver, I think.

Unlike Shimano, Campagnolo aluminum freehub bodies aren't damaged by the cogs because Campagnolo made the splines deeper with the move to 9 speeds (and Record Titanium 8 speed before that).

Decent silver hubs under $500 a set:
Ambrosio Zenith, Velocity Road, Novatec/Formula variants: should be about 300-350 grams and $100-175
C-4 components, specifically - you could go 102 front and 225 rear for $280.
White Industries

I would probably go for the C-4

I do not and will not sell Campy's cheap junky Centaur or Veloce or Athena hubs or whatever name they're giving them these days to confuse the public! I only sell the top quality Campy hubs. The Centaur hubs I have listed are not the current junk. These are older hubs and are very well made, just like Record or Chorus.
By the way, I get lots of grief from those who insist that everything Campagnolo makes is wonderful. Believe whatever you like. And buy whatever you like. But you can't buy the junk from me, because I simply won't sell it.
2000-2006 Centaur/Daytona are the same as Record - you just don't get the grease ports, the free hub has a steel pawl carrier that weighs 10g more, and the quick release lever isn't as attractive.

2007+ non Record hubs are cartridge bearing crap with familiar group names slapped on them (you can tell by the non drive-side bolt instead of a big aluminum axle with the large adjuster with flats on 3 sides and a pinch bolt). Pretty much what you got when you bought a Mirage hub in 2000 except they've been cosmetically altered to look like contemporary hubs which need to be big to fit large axles. If you're going to settle for the low quality get a pair of NOS 9/10 speed Mirage hubs off E-bay for $100 less. They'll be even cheaper than no-name hubs but have better bodies with coined spoke holes (the resulting cold forging provides better support for the spoke head/elbow. Shimano, Campagnolo, and Phil Wood do this. Many expensive hub makers do not make the tooling investment).

If you want nice silver Campagnolo hubs buy a set of wheels off E-bay (least expensive), pair of used hubs, or prepared to pony up big bucks for NOS with limited drillings - Peter White still has 2006 Centaur and Chorus hubs for $300 and $350 a pair, 36 holes only.

Don't care for the look of the 07 Centaur at TotalCyling (saw those, thought about it, read about them, found the same as Drew mentions above, pass).

Putting some feelers out for some of the 06 Centaur or similar in 32h. If I find any, I'll buy a set regardless as sooner or later I'll need another set I figure.

I hadn't heard about C-4, will have to look into them. Price point seems to be about the area I'd be interested in if the price reflects the quality. Also, just heard from Sean at Soul Wheels, he's told me that he's adding silver hubs to the color options of his Soul Prodigy hubs (20/24h only).

didnt see that stuff about the centaur hubs, i think PW is being way too harsh, there is nothing wrong with cartridge hubs, but i understand the point.

Mostly I don't care for the look of the 07 Centaur hubs. True, the price is good, and maybe the photo just makes them look bulky, but if the frame is going to have lines like this:

The hubs should look like this:

Me thinks your custom steel frameset deserves good hubs. Pony up for the White Industries.
