Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think he made it up the hill at least twice. He said it was difficult. I think he went straight up the hill, too.

Most people circle around to the street to the north, which offers a much less steep descent (but still probably 20% plus).

If you ever visit San Francisco, the sidewalk of Broderick street is 38%. My Powertap showed 600 watts for 4 mph in 30x26 with my entire weight it seemed over the handlebars. It's too narrow to zig zag. You either make it up or fall over.

That climb looks like the majority of the streets in the San Bruno Mountain starting from El Camino Real going past Hwy 35 all the way to the top!

That would have been me. Yes, I climbed it. As I'm former record holder for most times up in one day, I pull that jersey out once a year and put it on when I make it to the top. ;-)

Used to love riding in that area. I'd start my ride off up Mt San Bruno and then head down the Peninsula and then up and over Ralston and over Bunker Hill for fun At least one time I did a repeat to the radio towers for a short ride for a quick ~2500' gain in 7 miles

Great post OP, really liked your narrative. We need more of this round here.

We need street names, San Bruno Mtn is my work ride, so anything steeper in the vicinity would need to be checked out...

That only gets up to ~12% or so max grade - don't get me wrong, I love riding San Bruno Mtn, but it's no Fargo St.

Oh I know, just saying that I enjoyed riding around San Bruno when I lived on the Peninsula. There's a couple streets in SF that are close to the grade of Fargo St and there's Marin Ave in Berkeley that's a good challenge too. I'd like to try Fargo St if I'm ever down in SoCal with my bike.

If you had fun doing that, come out to Feel My Legs this year. Ride 10 of the steepest streets in Los Angeles. It will put some more hair on your chest (male and female).

1. Mt Washington drive / Self-realization (Mt. Washington)
2. Eldred st (Highland Park)
3. Amethyst st (El Sereno)
4. Thomas st (Lincoln Heights)
5. White Knoll/Marview (Echo Park)
6. Echo Park ave/Baxter (Echo Park)
7. Micheletorena (Silver Lake)
8. Silver Lake blvd/Duane (Silver Lake)
9. Fargo st (Echo Park)
10. Stadium way/Academy/Boylston (Elysian Park)

I don't know the name of the street that I thought looks almost like Fargo (judging from the photo). It was my first time in that area for a choir practice. I know the climb from El Camino to Hwy 35 may not be steep enough for those who are used to it, but everytime we're in that area to sing at St. Agustin, it looks pretty steep - in my eyes. An example, for those who are familiar with the area, a short climb from Junipero Serra up on Serramonte Blvd to Callan looks steep for someone like me who haven't done any short-burst climbs on a road bike for so many years - I feel like a rookie all over again when I think about it. Then you make a left on Callan, then somewhere before King Dr is another section that looks pretty tough on my eyes.

The area in San Bruno is off of Hwy 35. We were heading south on Hwy 35 from Westborough and we turned right somewhere. And our friend's house goes up and up close to the top and I got tired thinking about the "what ifs on a bike". LOL
