Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The one that's not in my bibs making the ride just a little more fun.

This is possibly the Fredliest poll ever posted here. Not only is there no option for just lifting a few fingers or nodding (which is still Fredly), there's no option for ignoring the other cyclists at all.

I'm normally a nodder or finger lifter though I occasionally extend a hand. This is always done on the left side as they probably wouldn't see anything if I did it from the right.

It's only for the fun cyclists, not the snobby elitists.

Then this poll is redundant. We know what either will do or won't do. If it's a matter of polling "which hand", then it's at least 50/50.

I saw in the news yesterday that the latest research indicated that kids thought food was tastier when they were packaged with colourful graphics or cartoons, as opposed to just plain wrapping. Really? We had to research that? Just saying.

Are cyclists in the U.K. forced to wave with the opposite hand?

Bonus: Is this a wave?

Why isn't there a poll for which finger you use?

Also, I snubbed half a dozen commuters this morning ( HIGH FIVE ) but waived at a fellow roadie.

On the sub-forum page, the title read "What hand do you use..."

I thought..."oh goody...somebody is gonna get banned"! Disappointed to see it was another waving thread. Left.

I dont wave. I get off the bike, run up to them and give them 3 kisses on the cheek, Spanish-style.

It ruins my average speed, though.

Whichever one has the fewest pubes stuck to it. Yeah, I know I don't have to be so considerate, but it's who I am.

But which side do you start with? Kiss on the left first, or right?

As a heads up, NOBODY waves in Belgium. It just isn't done. Maybe a nod, if that.

So, the people that don't wave at you are simply more Euro than you are. Feel terrible about yourselves, knaves.

i don't wave at other cyclists, i just put my head down and keep riding, i'm training and them waving at me just intrudes on my "me" time. besides, if they aren't in full kit they aren't serious and don't deserve acknowledgment.

oh, wait, that's not me, that's the other cyclists i wave at. i usually wave with my left hand.

It's good to know regional variations in waving customs. Maybe someone should set up a website.
