This crap makes no sence to me. why do I give a rip if you all dont like my tripple? I ride a ultegra tripple and it shifts flawlessly, everytime. actually I have 3, two tens and a 9. 30, 39, 52, I go with a tripple because when I do hill work I am waisted when I am finished. sometimes I need the granny to get up my friggin driveway. Most of you 150 LBS. guys can easily push a standard crank up a long hill, no problemo. but I weigh 240lbs. still think a double is reasonable? you really think that 6 oz. of a granny gear sprocket is something that keeps us beginers and non profesional wannabee's up at night with worry? me, when I am in shape and a little lighter, can climb o.k. not great, but I get there. But, I am still out there having fun.
and yes a compact double is a compromise, that most of the time should be just as embarasing to the user as you think a triple is. why? because you gave up your high gears. you are saying to the world that you dont need those gears at the top of the chart because you never use them ,ie. you never go that fast anyway! you gave up those gear combinations just to have a double. That my friend is some strange reasoning. but you dont hear anything about that. the point is ,that as has been stated ,a tripple , compact, or double is a tool. just as personal as a seat selection. with a tripple if I dont need the granny I just dont select it. but with a double, if I need it .....I guess I am pushing. |

That is only a very small part of it even though that might seem to be your whole world right now.
Perhaps as you grow and mature you will realize that cycling is so much more than one's ability to withstand pain and get stronger and whether or not you should have to worry about being dropped. I'll be riding a triple for quite some time and gearing down my road bike as I have to deal with a chronic back issue that impairs my ability to lay down the power I used to have... for as much as I enjoy making folks like you my ***** that is gonna have to wait a while. I am just going to enjoy the fact I can still ride.

I bow at your climbing prowess!
But that was yesterday... I rode 20 km today which was a big feat for a guy who hasn't ridden more than 10 km in two and a half months and since it is snowing, wet, windy, and cold I took the hybrid which rocks an mtb triple with a 24/32/42 and an 11-30 cassette and fenders. The worst grade was a short 12% over a few hundred feet and I did manage to stay out of the granny for that and stayed in the middle ring all the way home. It beats the couch. Whee ! |

I understand the point that ls01 is making. Not everyone rides a bike for the same reason. So, why put someone down for using a triple? I bought my triple because it was used and less than half the price of a new compact double. Other than a slight weight penalty, I see no down side to a triple in functionality. That is no down side unless you are disturbed by the opinions of arrogant snobs that think you are some how less of a man if you don't use the same equipment as them.
Sort of reminds me of the Hollywood red carpet reporters that criticize the clothing of the stars. Who gives a rats ass what these reporters think of someone’s clothes |

As they say in show business, break a leg. In your case, I hope it is both legs and arms because it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. |
Time to lock this one down for a bit.

After looking at this thread I think it would be better permanently locked. This has spun wildly out of control, with name calling, degrading of other members as well as insulting remarks which is against the forum guidelines and will not be tolerated.
To those who have contributed in a constructive manner, my apologies for having to do this. Siu Blue Wind Forum Admin |
