Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That new bike.....

666.

The wheels are from my previous bike, they will soon be replaced by a pair of Psimets with Powertap. I only rode it around the block a few times so far, but it rides like a dream. Almost too much so, I think I'm gonna have to replace the seatpost with something much more rigid, less forgiving. Right now I'm just trying to get the saddle height and fore/aft dialed in, then I'll FLIP IT and worry about handle bar height. I never used Speedplay pedals before today... but now that I know what I've been missing all this time, I wish I had.

I like the red on black cables, but I've never been someone who would like Specialized, I would go for a Trek myself.

I just built one of those at work the other day. Nice, but it was not fun to build with the internal cables. Nice bike.

Pretty much the exact reasons that Speedplay advertises about them: they're easy to get in to, just step straight down on them with the cleat while at any angle and they click right in to place. And I haven't rode them enough to find if this makes any difference, but there's a lot less distance between the bottom of your foot and the axle of the pedal. I actually had to lower the saddle height a cm or two to accommodate for that. These ones in particular also have a ton of float, which I need for my legs/knees.

My previous pedals were SPD-SL, Shimano R540's (or whatever the previous generation was called). Biggest difference with the Speedplays is that there is no need to enter the pedal from the correct angle... I just step straight down and push with the cleat centered over the pedal. There is minimal effort to unclip, but it does seem that you have to turn your heel much more than with the Shimanos... that's a good thing given the amount of float in these pedals.

Not joking at all. THIS is the seatpost that came on the bike. It could very well be my weight, but I find that it flexes way too much for my comfort.

Thank you, it came as a hand-me-down with the house. Unfortunately I do not have a nice enough bench to snap a proper BF-approved inside bike photo.

And thank you too.... they came in the cabinet. 3 or 4 generations in the family, I believe. My walls aren't really pink as they may seem in the photo, they're 'Accessible Beige'.

I started riding in June of 2010. I pulled my old Trek 820 out from the rafters in our garage. It was there for ten years. In September 2010 I decided it was time to get new pedals. I was talked into the Shimano R540's. This to me was a good choice as a starter set knowing that I would be getting a road bike within 6 months. I got my road bike and bought Shimano PD-5700's. Little did I know that the R540's was the reason I started to having problems with my knees and burning all the time. I started taking glucosamine pills which helped. Winter came and I kept taking the glucosamine pills for some time until at least the end of January as I realized the pain was gone. I had not ridden my bike for a couple of months so I thought no reason to take the pills anymore. My new bike arrives, I order the new PD-5700 pedals to match to my shoes and cleats and the pain comes back in my right knee. Here on BF I read about Speed Play pedals and I after talking a bike shop I buy a set of Speedplay Zero's.

A total different feeling, easier to kick out, way more float and the pain in my knees is gone. Clipping in I know everyone says it is easier but I find it a bit tougher. I am sure it will get easier with time.

Nice ride, but you might want to FLIP IT to get the bar height somewhere near where it's supposed to be before dialing in seat height, fore/aft, etc. No sense in adjusting things when your reach (and body position) are going to change. The Roubaix already has a relaxed or "endurance" geometry (ie, taller head tube). Having your stem like that is serious overkill. It's obvious when your handlebars are higher than your seat. Besides, that's why headset spacers are included.

I love the look, but wish the "specialized" logo had been painted a different color. I don't really like the black on black. If it had been red, that would be one sweet color scheme
