5,000 miles in a year
 

Last night I rolled over my 5,000th mile in the year since I bought my first road bike. By the 24th, when I bought the bike last year, I should have about 5,200 for the full year.

Man! Rolling over that 5,000th mile felt great! My buddy and I were working together and averaged 22.2mph for 25miles to get there. The last several miles we were pushing between 25 and 28 mph. Felt SO good to roll over that milestone and to do it with friends.

I'd like to know though, how 5,000 miles a year stacks up. I know there are giant mileage threads (props Pcad), but I'm interested in what normal human beings are pulling off, either yearly, or in their first year.

I had 5,000 my first year as well. Hoping for 10,000 this year!

You all are in warm weather, makes it a little easier to get the high mileage than us stuck with real winters. :o

For what it's worth, I got back on the bike in July and have about 3,600 miles so far, I should have close to 6,000 miles for my first year back. Not bad considering how nasty this winter has been.

Thanks! I don't commute, though I've done it a few times. Heading from Montrose to the Energy Corridor is pretty hairy. I knock out my miles with my ride group, Come Ride With Us!, and get 90-150 miles a week. Just started racing with GCCA too.

I just ride for fun and get some good miles doing that.

Nice job. I did a bit over 6k in my first year, not that it's a competition. That's about 1k more miles for those of you scoring at home. :)

Ha, sorry- Come Ride With Us! is actually the name of the our group on Meetup.com. You really are more than welcome to come out though; we have riders from all paces and experience levels, and it's a really solid group of folks. We're on the road Sun, Mon, Tue, and Thursday with some Saturdays thrown in on occasion.

I don't know, I'm not normal.

I got just over 8,000 miles last calendar year.

5,000 is probably about what I do, aside from commute miles.

I agree with others, being in a warm climate helps. I'd probably ride more if it were warmer in winter, or I somehow enjoyed cold weather riding.


If you ride with groups more you'll probably find your mileage goes up. A combination of the fact that you can go farther in a group, and the social factor gets you to show up more consistently and stay out longer.

1,250...but that's considering I'm at school for 9 months of the year without my bike(no team and I know I'd ride it when I should be doing work...plus I wouldn't trust it at school) and winters are brutal, so winter break I don't get any miles in. I'm on break this week, but the roads are way too sandy to think about riding on them

I started riding last June 2010 and got in 1300 before the snow started falling or was too cold to ride. I expect to do way more this year having a better bike, starting out earlier, being a lot less heavy. When I started I had trouble riding one mile at a time. Last fall I average 20 miles per trip. I would like to see 3 thousand.

And I thought I was doing well with 2400 miles my first year. Guess I need to stop letting work and family intefere with my riding schedule.

Fortunately, I can head out of work when I have to (for now), and better still, I met my girlfriend through the ride group. Many of those miles have been shared with her.

Did you go on The Birth of Texas ride?

Unfortunately I was stuck working in Tyler at that point. It's one of the few rides I've missed with the group.

EDIT: Though I was able to get in some good hill rides while I was there, that was fun.

I'm going to have to write down some of those to use later. :D

Hey, I tell it like it is. Being in college, would you want to wipe out on sand and bust a $3200 bike? As I have no real source of income, I wouldn't want to have to be faced with the choice of how to replace it if something should happen

I'm probably not the best person to ask. I did way too many road rides on snow and ice this winter on my roadie. I've never been known for using the best judgement.
