Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How much does your LBS charge for Speedplay Zero Bearing replacements?

Mine wants to charge $50 per pedal.

I'm thinking of doing it myself, which requires me buying the bearings, grease gun, soldering iron (to remove torx screw), loctite. How easy it to replace them?

There was a guy that was selling kits for what u want, sadly speedplay took him off because they say he was going against copyrights and stuff. He even had the instructions of what to do and stuff. Maybe u can find something if you google it.

I called Speedplay and they said that the pedals could be rebuilt by the owner but that a rebuild kit needed to be purchased from a LBS. It looks like Ti and SS pedals are more complicated to rebuild than chromoly.

See this post. This one as well. I'd be interested to read any update you care to post if you do this yourself. How many miles do you have on your pedals?

8000km, the right bearing has play and feels grindy, left pedal tiny bit of play still smooth.

Thanks, found a guy on weightweenies that may have a way of getting spares, PM'd him, waiting for reply.

However after reading the saga, thinking twice about rebuilding the pedals, not cool Speedplay, not cool.

Did you ever grease them or otherwise lubricate them in that 8000 km?

I have 1700 miles (2700 km) on my Zeros and I just greased them for the first time. I couldn't tell whether they needed it or not.

I just bought Stainless Zero's. The LBS told me to grease them about every 3 or 4 months.

Very easy to do. I did mine with the bearing kit I bought from the guy (before the fiasco) and it was very easy. Bought a soldering iron at Sear for like $15. I plan on doing a 2nd set if I can find the guy again now that he has gone underground.

No grease just try teflon lube. How did you guys re grease? LBS, or get your own grease gun, or "syringe method"?

The first guy I pm'd on WW gave me the contact. Just pm'd him, hopefully he's still active.

Did you do a full rebuild? I was thinking I'd just change the bearings and O-rings, that should be fine right?

I did everything but the needle bearings, including new Ti spindles. I may drop you a PM.

Excluding shipping? I'm from Australia, if I have to ship it to the US, it's probably not worth it.

I greased them with this grease and this grease gun. I just removed the screw on the grease-port and pumped grease in until it overflowed.

Cool, I'd better get one of those myself.

UPDATE: Parts are available!

Haha yes, with the cost of the rebuild, I could just buy a new set of 105 pedals. But, I can't give up the double sided entry and adjustable float.

While we're on the topic, I notice that the bearings sold by Speedplay and the equivalents recommended by one poster on WeightWeenies both appear to be shielded:

Wouldn't it be easier for grease injected into the pedals to lubricate the bearings if they were not shielded? BTW I freely admit I know practically nothing about bearings.

just ordered a Bebop rebuild kit from Amazon. $20 shipped. I have them on both road bikes + my mtb. they're all good at present, one pair has 'round 5k on them. but at that price may as well have a set on hand.
