light tubes?
I was looking at the various "light" conti tubes at my lbs today and was wondering if there is a happy medium between lighter than normal tubes but still good for daily riding and not overly expensive (they ranged from about $9 to $25). I'm looking to lower rotational weight but I don't want to end up with flats left and right or pay $25 for a tube. Thoughts/experiences?

I've found thin tubes to be a little more susceptible to pinch flats but those shouldn't be frequent if you keep them inflated to the right pressure. Other causes of flats such as glass, thorns, etc. will eventually get through a normal tube anyway so it won't make a difference if you use the lighter tubes. The main benefit of the lighter tubes is that they slightly reduce the rolling resistance of the wheels since there'll be less energy loss as the tube flexes in the area of the contact patch. Disadvantages are the higher cost and the need to pump up the tire more frequently since they'll be a little more permeable to air.

Performance Forte Luna Light at about $9.99. About 50grams. I believe they were $7.99 at one time. Problem Solved. |
Every 50- 55 gram tube I have used ended up shreading in about 3-4 months. I would say there are no reliable tubes below 70g.
