Buying new bike... Color dillema... what would you do?
I'm going to be buying my first road bike tomorrow or Friday. I am looking at the Scott CR team 11'. My lbs has the 10' model as well same price, but 10% off (roughly $185). Now, the color I love hands down is the 11 model, which is the black, red, and white. I think the 10' is so bland and boring being white, but I could force myself to eventually like it. Of course, I've got to buy pedals, helmet, etc... etc... as well so that 10% could really help.
Now, I was all set on getting the bike that I want and would be happy with even if it costs a little more, but I forgot to keep in mind I wanted to have a custom paint job eventually. With the 11' model, I more than likely wouldn't get it painted any time soon, because I'm not sure if I'd get tired of it so quick. Blk/red are 2 of my favorite colors in combination. Now, the white one if I get it, like I said I would learn to love it and all, but I'd definitely get it painted quicker, pretty soon (4-6 months). Plus, I'm thinking it will be less flashy and less likely to be looked at for someone to steal (I'm stretching for reasons, lol).
Can anyone give me a general idea of what a quality paint job would run? I'd like to do a dark metallic gunmetal gray and maybe some dark green (darker street sign). I guess that would help to know if it might be worth it.
What do you guys think?

It depends on how many colors, what type of finish, and other options, but good custom paint jobs on carbon frames seem to run $500 on up. One thing to consider, if you don't keep things for long, a custom paint job usually lowers the resale value because potential buyers are wary that the paint might be hiding damage or defect.

Good for you, so did they only have one color available? What's wrong with a little preference? I see the threads with people with great looking bikes who have done things to make them look better/worse... what's your point?
This is my first time dropping a lot of money on a bike and I'd like it to look just as good as it rides.

Pay up the extra money for the color you like. Painting it will void the warranty most likely. If you want one to paint, get a cheap chinese one off ebay.
You asked what I'd do.. that's what I'd do.

I think that since it being your first bike, you either love it, and keep it forever. Or ride it and when u find a new one you want, you'd be tempted to sell it.
So, as urbanknight said, if you going to custom paint, make sure its a keeper. It makes sense to buy something you like to look, feel and be proud of. Kinda keeps you wanting to jump on the bike and ride.
Just my opinion.
I have a caad 9-6, and was looking to sell it to get a caad10-4. But i decided to keep the 9-6 and upgrade it instead cause i like the color and look over the newer one.

Thanks, I think for some of the reasons mentioned above I will go for the 11. I am planning to keep my hybrid and I custom paint one it'll be that one or whenever they may be a need, if there ever may be one to upgrade then I'll worry about that then. Thanks for the helpful replies... the negative one can kick rocks!
I'm excited. Hopefully, tomorrow will be the big day.

stole your bike
if the price difference is $185 I'd get the bike in the color I want; if it's a $500 difference then my taste in colors can change.

Get the bike that you want!
That even when you can't ride it, you want to!
The bike that makes you smile when to start a ride, and when you finish a ride.
If you are smiling during a ride, HTFU!
185 is not a great amount when you think of it long term. Every time a red and black one passes you....errr...sorry...you pass them,
you will wish you bought that one.

This. A single color paint with prep and such is going to run an easy $300-$500, multi-colors will add another $100-$200.

I have always found that for me, it is cheaper to do it right the first time. I love the nude carbon on the 2011, and the new 5700 with the cables running under the tape is cool. So to move up a year, get the color that you want and a upgrade in the groupo. . .seems like a no brainer to me. But it is easy when you are sitting in the cheap seats.

For $185, I'd get the colors I wanted as well. Figure if I am going to keep the bike for a few years, might as well have something that I like. I've never regretted spending a little more than originally planned to get something I really want - OTOH, I've often had buyers regret after skimping out and buying something which was a "compromise".

Well, they made it kind of easy for me. The 11 model was out of stock in my size (56) everywhere and would have been May until they ordered one from the manufacturer. So, I went with the 10 model and they said if I wanted or needed to I can bring it back in later and exchange it out just swap the tires over. He told me we can kind of accessorize it to stand out a little more, so we added red tires, went with the cheaper Look Keo classic pedals , some Shimano shoes ($89/99), and he's picking some glossier tpe red bar tape that will be ready when I pick it up today around 5 or 6. After I saw it, it put a smile on my face and I felt a little better about it. Plus, I got the 3 yr warranty (I felt it was worth it... agree?) covers accidents as well. Not sure in the event it's an older model and the can't get it anymore what the do as far as replacement (might work in my favor later on?), but I figure with this investment it'd be stupid not to get it. I still need to bu a helmet and I think I'll be good to go. I'll post some pictures later on this evening to see what you guys think. Thanks again for the advice. so far, I feel good about it.
Have to go back up later on with short to get sized and I'll be bringer her home. Wooo! (sorry... little excited)

If anyone could be as nice as to tell me since I bought new tires, do I want the old ones back for the future or for any reason? After you change the tires out, do you ask or do they just keep them? I don't want to be petty.

If you paid for the new tires, I'd definitely want the stock tires to keep for spares.
As for buying extended warranties, they are almost always sucker bets. When you figure in the time value of money, the person selling the warranty comes out ahead on average the vast majority of the time Otherwise, they wouldn't sell the warranty.
