Question about wheels

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Question about wheels

Hello,

I have been looking all over for a good set of carbon fiber wheels. Like most, I am on a budget.

What do you guys think about this wheelset?

It seems to good to be true!

Thanks,

Do they need to be tubular wheels?

It means that the tires are glued to the rim. (A tape that replaces glue is now available. Can't recall who makes it.) Tubulars are often used by racers. For most folks these tires tend to be not fixable in the field, so you'd want to carry a spare tire, along with your pump or CO2 inflator.

Tubular wheelsets should be lighter than clinchers - the kind of rims that are most likely on your road bike.

The wheels you are looking at are tubulars and for most non-racers, they are not practical. What most people ride with are clinchers. For me, carbon wheels are not practical either. Most have braking surfaces that require special brake pads. Also, carbon wheels can be damaged much easier. I would buy aluminum clinchers. Williams Wheels gives you a lot of wheel for the money. I think others can chime in on this too.

I have also noticed that the wheels that you are looking at are Campy wheels. Campagnolo hubs are not compatible with Shimano or SRAM. If you own Campy, great welcome to the club. I am a Campy user but if you are not, these wheels will not work for you.

I think he wasn't sure what he meant by saying "wheels" as opposed to "tires."

"Shimano or Campagnolo Hubset" -- These wheels are available in both.

It is a fair question. I just don't see a lot new cyclists buying tubbies unless they are racers.

These are the same wheels as sold by Cycle Taiwan, but at a better price. IIRC, they are manufactured by Tank Cycles. I don't know anyone who rides them, but they appear to be fairly straightforward, generic Asian wheels. The spokes are DT, and the hubs appear to be similar to a lot of rebranded wheels.

"carbon wheels" and "budget" do not go together.

I have a set of clincher carbon wheels with alum braking strips. They do give me a little more top end speed but they ride hard and are no fun with cross winds. I am thinking about running my old wheels and running the carbon wheels for special events or low wind days.
