Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Interesting sign

There is this awesome road north of Escondido, CA behind the Lawrence Welk Resort that goes up the side of this mountain. You and see the road twist up from Interstate 15. Today I decided to check it out. Unfortunately, the road is private and gated, but here's the sign out front.

You should contact them and ask them for permission to ride it once. I'd send them a nicely written letter asking for one-time entry. Worst thing they can do is say no.

If I read that right, the sign says trucks can't go in that way and should take a map to find the route for deliveries.

Not that I'm encouraging anything, but this is correct... at least in California. If there are no "no trespassing" signs and you make sure not to damage the property, you don't interfere with anything being done on the property, and you leave if asked, you're not breaking any laws. Then again, a guy walking around on his property while carrying a shotgun "for protection" isn't breaking any laws either.

I think the gate may be why he can't ride up it.

Just make sure that your brakes are working for the ride down.

There is a gate guard at the bottom as well as a very large gate. I asked the guard if they ever let cyclists ride up. He laughed and said no. I like the idea of writing a letter...but since it's private property and California is such a litigious society, I can understand them not wanting cyclists to ride it.
