Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best All-Around Clincher Tire?

Hi all,

I'm in the market for new clinchers. I've only got one set of wheels, so I need a pair of clinchers that can be used for racing, but will also stand up to 10-14 hours of riding per week outside of that. Suggestions?

Bikes: Specialized Tarmac Expert, 2002 TREK 520, Schwinn Mesa WINTER BIKE, Huffy Rock Creek 29er, 1970s-era Ross ten speed. All my bikes are highly modified(except the Tarmac) yet functional, and generally look beat to ****. .

Pretty relative question bro.

Do you want fast tires? Or do you want durability? Any race tire can be used for training, It just won't last as long. Any training tire can be used for racing, you just won't go as fast.

A good compromise is Conti Ultra Gatorskins.

A local wheel builder that a lot of people in my bike club use told me that Conti GP4000s were best cycling tires on the market. I have never used Michelins but when I switched from Conti GP4 Seasons to the GP4000s the change was dramatic. The GP4000s has a ride quality that I really like. The GP4 Seasons felt heavy, harsh and sluggish in comparison.

I used to be a Conti fan, but there is something about the rubber compound on their tired that I just do not like. I prefer anything from Michelin, Vittoria, Schwable or Kenda over Conti's for racing.

However - my only go to training tire are the Gatorskins.

A lot depends on the condition of the surfaces that you ride on and your budget.

I like Michelin Pro 3's, but I ride some really rough surfaces. That tears up racing tires, especially on the rear wheel. So now it's a Pro 3 on the front and a Specailized Armadillo Elite (folding) on the rear.

I'm still a fan of Michelin Krylion for that sweet spot in the performance/durability/puncture resistance triangle.

+1

I've used Gatorskins before and they sucked, rolled like crap and had weak sidewall.

MY LBS recommended these and now Buyer Remorse.
They roll OK, but inflexible. Tippy at slow speeds and cornering. Tried 80psi but it didn't help much.
I'll keep it on the rear for puncture protection, which is its strong suit, but put an old Bontrager XLite on the front. The difference was night and day.

Whats the differnce between the gp4000 and th gp4000s. My shop was out of the 4000s and I needed tires so I just got the 4000. Is there a huge diffrerence. I use them for training and racing.

I seem to have answered my own question. 10g more. Looks to have a thicker tread. Same 330 TPI and black chili.
