Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Newbie: what bike to choose.?

I am new to biking in manhattan.
I am looking to hit the streets with a bike but am pretty uneducated on the bike I should be riding..

I am looking for something more versatile than a road bike but not a mountain bike..

my range would be $400-$500 ..

any advice would be appreciated..

Define what you mean when you say "versatile". Give some more information about what kind of riding you'd like to be doing and how often/far you intend to ride.

My girlfriend and I were in NYC in early March, and I don't understand why someone would get a bike just to ride around on. Even if you're gonna be hauling stuff, it seems to much faster and cheaper just to use the subway. Plus, who would ride a bike on the road with those crazy taxi drivers????

Maybe if you're delivering food and it's just a few blocks then a bike could be faster than walking.

Either way, just do what the messengers do and either steal one or buy a stolen one for cheap There is a nice Scott that got nipped from a medical school in NYC (there was a thread here a few days ago) that is probably for sale at a pawnshop somewhere.
