Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I Got Stung In The Face

OUCH.

I was out for a Saturday morning cruise with my kiddo at and some sort of bee hit my lip at full speed and stung me. I never saw what it actually was but I let out a yelp which scared my boy as he was riding in front of me. It hurt like crazy. I could feel my lip starting to swell but it slowed down pretty quick. We were barely into our ride so I kept on.

I think from now on I'm going to throw a few Benedryl in the bag - just in case.

I feel your pain. Similar thing happened to me where a huge bee got stuck behind my sunglasses and stung me near my eye. My eye swelled up where I couldn't put my contact lens in.

Next time you could try covering your face in honey to make the bees happier and less sting-y.

A few days ago I accidentally rode underneath a huge swarm of bees I didn't see them until I was right on top of them. I ducked down and hauled ass out of there! Luckily they were flying higher than my head, so no stings.

The scary thing is, this was on a city street! It was next to an abandoned building, so maybe there was a hive in there.

A few years ago, I was descending a hill at about 35 mph when a bee hit me in the face, just above my lip. I was stung from the impact. Of course I let out a few choice words that would be censored here, but I finished the century and later went out drinking that night. The next morning, I knew something was wrong as soon as I woke up - my lip had swollen up. It continued throughout the rest of the day, progressively heading toward my eye and throat until I went to the ER. Some Benadryl and a steroid got it under control, but since then, I ride with an epi pen during the warmer months. Oddly enough, I've been stung since then, but without such a dramatic reaction.

I'm glad that you didn't have a severe reaction, or crash.

If you were referring to me, well, seeing a friend in the ER while my face was swollen up like Quasimodo was enough fun that I forgot to take pictures for posterity.

Perhaps from the force of the impact, if you're going fast enough?

I got one up my shirt on a downhill a couple of summers ago. Yeeeeouch!

Worst I've had was when I was painting a house and yellowjacket had crawled into my pint carton of chocolate milk. I also had some cheesy popcorn on hand. Grabbed a handful of popcorn and crunched. Then grabbed my milk for a sip. I was like "Damn, the popcorn is moving!!!! WTH???" Then spit the beast out but it caught my lip on the way out and that was just about enough for me to go crying home to mommy.

Last Tuesday evening, Rowan and I went for a ride and I inhaled a bug of some sort. It wasn't particularly large and I didn't think much of it ... I just figured I'd hack it out and be fine.

But I ended up hacking and hacking and hacking, and my sinuses let loose like when I have an allergic reaction to something ... and I tried to drink, and I had to stop to blow my nose and cough up mouthfuls of stuff and wipe my eyes.

Later that evening, it felt like I had a large grape lodged in my throat, and my throat, the back of my tongue, and back of my mouth went numb like if I had a dental freezing. On Wednesday, I wasn't feeling particularly well, and was still experiencing the same symptoms except that my voice also went all deep and raspy. I was actually starting to get a bit worried.

Thursday, the "grape" had shrunk down to a "pea" and my throat, tongue and mouth went into pins and needles like when dental freezing starts to come out.

I've been a bit congested, had a bit of a sore, scratchy throat, and had a little bit of a raspy voice since.

I don't know what kind of bug it was ... but I'm guessing it let loose with some sort of protective poison in a last-ditch attempt to avoid being eaten. Powerful stuff! If I were a bird, I'm make a note not to eat that kind of bug in future.

Yes. And bees only sting once since they have a barbed stinger which can stay in the skin attached to a venon sac that continues to pump venom into you. Good to scrap the sac off with a finger nail or something to limit the amount of venom pumping in. Wasps, hornets, yellowjackets can sting multiple times since they don't have a barbed stinger.

I often get insects in my helmet and figure if they're either going to find their way back out or go deeper and get pissed off. I rarely have to remove the helmet since they usually find their way.

I've had encounters with all sorts of critters while riding. But only wasps/yellow jackets resulted in a sting. Bees have hit or landed on me but I have been able to get rid of them. The wasps stung on impact. I saw them coming and they still got me. So based on that I thought that bees are slower to react aggressively. Same thing off the bike. With bees I could feel them on me before the sting. With wasps the sting was the first indication of an encounter.

I don't know for sure that it was a bee, but was something with a stinger. I swatted it too fast to see what exactly it was. All I know is it hurt like heck and my lip started welling within seconds.

Not sure why someone thinks this would be made up. I guess I should've taken a pic but my lip didn't swell up super huge or anything.

One time in college, I got bit by something and I woke up one morning and my lip was as round as a roll of quarters. I couldn't stop laughing at how silly it looked.

I got stung on my head, under the front of my helmet, last year. My eye was starting to get numb on that one. A month later, I got stung on the thigh during a fast descent. This, surprisingly, hurt way worse.

Both times I stopped to pull out the stinger. It hurts, but after 10 minutes or so of hard riding; you forget about it.
