After today's sore foot incident (about mile 50....yeah zappcat...the shortcut I thought was going to work home..well...didnt ), I decided it's about time to drop the regular SPDs and get some road shoes, hopefully the wider contact point will reduce the hotspots I get on long rides.
Onto shoes...My preference is cheap and stiff soles, that's about it. I am using the $30 Performance Forte II as my current shoe, and it's been pretty good to me, but is finally falling apart..so I have a good reason to drop cash on pedals, cleats, and shoes

Look PP206 pedals are a steal - lighter than any other Look excpet the Keo, which was just released, and cheaper than almost any other Look. They have adjustable relese tension and have good float with the red cleats.
The Looks have a nice wide platform - I used SPDs before my Looks and I'll never go back.
Advice: spend some money on the shoes - you generally get what you pay for.

I've come to like my speedplays...after learning a bit about the "care and feeding" of a speedplay "x" pedal. the float is great, low weight, and good cornerning clearance (a big problem on my old spds). best of all, they are easy to get into once you buy the cleat covers and keep them clean. or just buy the zeros...
anyway, for shoes, I think you should look for a carbon sole. I have a pair of nikes that I really like, and they are really stiff, and fit me really well. However, I've heard that a lot of people dont like the way nike's fit, so your experiences might vary.

Check out the Supergo retail store in Mountain View if you can get up. They have floor stacks of past years(2002,2003) shoes for cheaper. I think they had the Sidi Dynamic 2 for $50 or so...it is an older shoe..but Sidi's are considered the Gold standard....
They have some newer shoes on sale also....
I use the Look 5.1 pedals. They are $90 at Performance..teh Look PP247 are on sale for $75

Sidi's are excellent (though pricey) but shoes are very subjective since fit is all important. Try several the pick one for comfort. Pedals are not as subjective so get the SPD-SL and be done with it.

The Foot Dr. is in! I am a Podiatrist, and you should go to LBS, and try on a number of shoe's. My observations are that many people will go to LBS, wearing socks they would not normally wear on a ride. This is imperative, as this may mean wide versus narrow width. I have tried on quite a few biking shoes, and found that Sidi's have the most options, from a sizing, and adjustment standpoint. They are also limited to just Bicycling shoes. There are no "Air Lance" shoe's made by Sidi. Although you may get a pair of Nike's that fit you comfortably, they don't have the technology that Sidi uses from their expensive experience in biking. Lastly, I like the suggestion regarding going to Supergo, and purchasing a "left over" pair. This should save you money, and get you into a great pair of shoes. Regarding pedal's, I don't have enough experience yet to comment on them.
Good luck, and PM me if you have other questions

Sidis are overpriced and undermade. Had a pair of genius 4s literally start to fall apart on me. They look beautiful and are made from exclusive materials and (like most italian clothing etc.) they cost a lot more than they are worth. Nike Hautacams are the bomb so long as your feet aren't too wide.

$360 for the non-custom road shoe. But about 100g lighter than the Nike's (yeah, I'm a weight weenie but it's all in good fun). The only problem would be that I might not be able to try them on beforehand.
Or maybe if I'm really crazy I'll order some Lust shoes for $900 and 256g

[QUOTE=MackDaddy]Not a problem with your opinion, but again, if they fell apart on you take advantage of the warranty! From what the LBS manager said, SIDI has a very liberal warranty swapout policy. I'd at least give it a try.

Sidi's are great but if you can't justify the cost, check out Pearl Izumi Vortex. About half the cost. I bought a pair this summer and they are the most comfortable shoes I've ever had.

I think everyones gotten away from "cheap" being one of catatonic's criteria. I love my Specialised Body Geometry road shoes, which set me back about $60.

And agree with both statements about Peal Izumi and Specialized BG shoes. Those are the one's I was trying alongside the Sidi's. They are both nice shoes, and lots cheaper than what I opted for. But for me, the Sidi's were hands down the most comfortable on my feet. Plus the fact that I worked 5 hours overtime yesterday to help pay for them didn't hurt either!

Sidi Lasers on clearance at Performance for $100... if you can find 'em, buy 'em immediately and keep looking. If you find shoes your feet like more, just return the Sidis.

I like the Sidi Genius 4's because, in addition to the Mega style fitting my wide feet, the small replacement parts are readily available. I have replaced the heels several times. I have also replaced buckles that have come loose and fallen off and purchased new insoles.
