My Edge 705 keeps dying

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Edge 705 keeps dying

Ever since I went to version 3.3, my 705 has been dying in the middle of my rides. I have to stop, turn it on, and hit the start button. I lose the elapsed time , but I keep the distance and the route data.

I've exchanged over ten emails with Garmin Support with no success. I've tried a hard reboot and i've tried to reload version 3.1. I tried two different methods for reloading 3.1 and neither was successful. In other words, I don't know if 3.3 is the problem and if 3.1 is the fix.

Anyone else's Edge dying in the middle of a ride? How did you fix the problem?

Thanks

Cliff

May or may be the same...
My old garmin kept dropping dead randomly during rides, turned out the seal was compromised, it had picked up water. Occasionally just enough bumps, the water would short out the board, shutoff. I could restart it, it would be fine for awhile, then repeat.

Thanks, were you able to fix it or did you just have to replace it? Garmin wants $110 to repair it and I'm thinking of just getting a new Edge 500 on eBay for $200.

The Garmin-Cervelo Team uses the Edge 500. But I don't know exclusively.

Garmin's software updates are notoriously buggy, but the last one I got from them (3.2 maybe?) was solid.

you might have better luck asking on the Garmin forum: https://forums.garmin.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21

good luck! if you don't need maps but just want to keep track of where you went, the 500 is a great catch

Seems there are a few others on the Garmin 705 forum having the same difficulty. I was running 3.3 for awhile but am back to 3.1. Mine shut off once or twice when running 3.3. Here's 3.1 if you want to go back:

Ended up replacing it, same story, contacted Garmin tech support, they wanted 110 to look at it, I bought a new one off ebay.

Thanks. How do you use this file? Garmin support sent me previous .gcd files to revert back to 3.1 and they instructed me to copy the file to the Garmin folder on my 705. I did this, but when I turned it on, it booted up normally and it was still using 3.3. I did the same thing with this file with the same result (still on 3.3). Why isn't it recognizing this or any .gcd file?

thanks,

Cliff

Hmmm good question. It's been a while since I did it and I don't remember the exact steps. Probably best to ask on the Garmin 705 forum.

The method that they told me didn't work.

I had the maps freeze a few times with 3.1 firmware, when following a tcx course file. No failures at all with 3.3.
