Weekend Cycling and Exercise - April 30/May1

Tell us about your ride this weekend! Where did you ride? How far did you go? Which bicycle did you use? What did you see? Who did you ride with?

Saturday - Today was a lovely autumn day. Many of the trees have changed, and a few are starting to lose their leaves now. But the sun was shining and the temperature got up to about 21C. We were able to cycling in shorts and jerseys.

We opted to do a bit of a hilly triangle loop from home. First a lap around our small town to warm up, then a climb out of town and a nice descent into a valley. Across an old bridge, and onto the main highway. From there it's basically flat until the bump to climb and descend into the first town on the route.

After a brief stop in that town, it's a long gradual climb, with a few steeper bits, and then long gradual descent to the next town. After a brief stop in that town, the route is flat for a bit, and then climbs into the town where we live.

I struggled a bit during the first part of the ride. I've been having a bit of trouble breathing lately. I'm not sure if it is a mild cold, allergies, or the rove beetle I swallowed a few weeks ago.

We rode our single bicycles because I wanted to give my titanium a good run now that the fork has been painted and the new handlebars have been installed. It was mostly good, but might need a couple little adjustments.

All up, we did 44.75 km.

Today, was a nice 75 deg. day but windy. left my house on Kadena Air Base, and rode out towards Camp Foster. A Marine base about 8 miles away. its mostly flat, with some rillong hills, kinda riding on the middle of the island, about 450 feet above seal level, but had about a 15 mph head wind. Got to Foster, and rode through the base down towards the ocean. nice fast decent, but cant go to fast cause I dont want to get a speeding ticket from the MP's. Left Camp Foster and road down the coast, had the wind behind me so I could cruise with the traffic at about 24, 25 mph. followed the coast line until I reached Kadena Air Base, went around the north side of base, a gradual up hill ride with a head wind from sea level until about 450 feet elevation, turned on to base, and headed back to my house!

Road my only road bike a Corratec Dolomiti, by myself, and all in all 18 miles, avg 13.7 mph

This is what I woke up to this morning:

My peach blossoms were not amused. Planning on a 50 miler this afternoon.

this morning i took my first ride on a "new-to-me" Trek 1200 and it felt great. rode for 1:25, about 23 miles, which is 2 mph average faster than my previous best on that route and distance. i attribute the increase in speed to:

(1) this bike is the right size for me, what i was riding before was a bit too small and the fit just wasn't right
(2) clipless pedals... i'm glad i went with these right off the bat with this bike, they're awesome and made the climbs MUCH easier
(3) wore spandex for the first time, i hear the spandex is good for about a 1 mph increase, plus my wife says it makes my butt look sexy

what i encountered on the bike trail... 2 small snakes (missed em both, they got off the trail before i could run em over), squirrels, a HUGE rabbit that jumped in front of me at the last second, boy scouts out hiking, and 2 random bee/wasp/yellow-jacket attacks (didn't get stung but still ticked me off)

i was up and riding before my wife was awake so we'll probably go on a more leisurely ride again this afternoon and take the camera along. i'll post some pics up if we do.

I'm hearing it is snowing all throughout the Canadian prairies ... still at the end of April!

Sunday - spent the afternoon scrubbing tar off my titanium bicycle. We rode through tar on our January century, and there was still a bit left on the bicycle. Tar is nasty stuff.

It was a gloomy, cool day with the threat of rain ... and evidently the temperatures are supposed to remain cool for the week. Nothing higher than 15C.

Shiny clean titanium!

60-mile century training ride yesterday through some flat farmland. It was windy but we had a good fast group which always makes things easier!

With the new job, the only time I get to ride is on the weekends. I knocked off a 42 miler at a nice 18 MPH with the Selma Cyclepaths, a local club in Clayton, NC. I wish I could ride during the week so I could increase those speeds, but for now, I'll settle for riding with the B group.

rode a ride called the Gap Grind here in Boone, North Carolina yesterday. I did the 1/2 metric (which was actually turned out to be 34 miles). Did a personal best, finished 8th, so I was very happy!!

Mild temperature (70F ish), clear blue skys Saturday in the Santa Cruz mountains. ~5-10 mph southeast wind made for a great uphill tailwind. Did something like 35 miles with 2800 ft of climbing. The R3 handled the descents like a champ.

Did a 32 mile ride yesterday on my Salsa La Raza. Did it out on one of the San Juan Islands here in WA. Lopez Island. I have been riding for a few years but usually stuck to 10-20ish mile rides. This was my first one of this length. had about 1000 ft of climbing... not the easiest for me. definitely an accomplishment for me.

42 hilly, windy miles yesterday. Rode my Interloc for the first time in several months...I've got to tune the derailleurs.

This is a shot from my turn-around spot...underneath a large bridge that goes over the spillway for one of the bigger dams in the area.

Anyone getting in some May riding?

May has turned wintery here ... I suppose that's to be expected. I might have to set the Giant up on the trainer this week.
