knee injury
For the last two months or so I have been having a problem with my right knee, right in the middle of the knee cap. it becomes irritated when I ride and when I swim. I was doing some speed walking, but I have stopped that because it brought on the pain. It doesn't hurt terribly, but it is very tender and makes my knee weak. Previously, i was diagnosed with patellar tendonitis when I was running. Once I stopped running it went away. I think that this is what it is again. I spoke to an orthopedic doctor this evening, and he said that I should rest it for a couple of weeks (ugh! that really gets me down). Wants me to stretch the hamstrings and to put warm compresses on it. Anybody else have experience with this kind of tendonitis? Truthfully, it does get better when I rest, but honestly, I have been taking it easy for almost two months. But I only rested it completely for about a week.

Yer lucky...
Got my diagnosis this morning, sprained PCL, complex tear in my MCL. Feels fine riding except when standing and hammering... Surgery needed...
Basketball is out until surgery/recovery is complete. Waiting until after riding season is over, probably September time for the surgery. DAMMIT!

and tendinitis can take a long time off before it starts to heal...the longer you wait to rest it, the longer you will have to take off (completely) to get it back to normal. hope that's not the issue, but you should actually go see a doc, rather than just talk to one, before you take (or avoid) any action.
pain in the center of the patella sounds more to me like chondromalacia than tendinitis, though.

That doesnt sound like tendinitis not that im a doc. 1 week wont even fix a cut on your hand let alone fix an overuse injury. The time spent resting starts after your last activity so taking it easy doesnt necessarily help. you need to stop completely to rest something and then get back in slowly.
See a doc, knees are too important.

Try a knee band. I get tendonitis in my left elbow from riding. Went away once I got this little strap I wear just below the elbow.

1) Did you get a "fit" done on your bike? If not, that could be the problem. if you did it may need to be tweeked. get another opinion.
2) how do you ride? do you push big gears? If you are a "masher" learn to spin, fast revolutions, light load (at the pedal) higher rpms. pushing to large a gear can destroy your knees.
3)n what pedal system are you using/ does this system provide any "float" you may need an adjustment in alignment for aft adjustment, see your fitter.

I had the same problem with my knee. The issue only came up when I started training my spins on lower gears. This was also a week and a half before my century. I didn't see a doctor, even though thats the most logical thing to do (scared of doctors). I stayed off my bike, rested, iced, compressed, and elevated my knee day in and day out, whenever I had the chance. Also tried to rehabilitate it by filling a sock with rice, and nuking it for 2 mins and rest it on my knee before I'd work or do light stretches at the gym.
The century was amazingly fun, and my knee has been good to me since. I've learned that rest and recovery are more beneficial than overtraining, so rest up and get well soon!

I do tend to push the big gears. I stopped doing that recently, but that didn't seem to do any good. It's not simply the bike, though. I get this pain even when I swim, which has caused me to swim in a way that depends less on the knees. But that didn't help either. I will see this ortho guy soon. He knows me well, so I trust his instincts. Sometimes there is a little soreness around the knee, which made me wonder about the tendonitis diagnosis. I do have a knee strap--used to wear it when I ran. Not helpful now.

Things to Know About ACL Tear & PCL Tear
Things to Know About ACL Tear & PCL Tear
The ACL stabilizes the knee and connects the thigh bone to the shin bone. The ACL may get injured due to sudden twisting. An ACL injury may also be accompanies with meniscus tear. A popping sound at the time of injury with swelling, pain and instability in the knee generally indicates an ACL injury. ACL injuries need surgical reconstruction since they do not heal on their own. Using the latest cutting edge techniques Surgeon performs ACL Tear & reconstruction using allograft and autograft methods.
PCL injuries can occur with low-energy as well as high-energy trauma. Isolated PCL tears occur in sports, but they are less frequent and less disabling than ACL tears.
PCL tears are often missed or misdiagnosed, and therefore probably more common than believed
symptoms:
Pain at the time of impact which over time may also be felt in the calf region.
Swelling, although this may be minimal.
Instability of the joint, perhaps associated with the feeling of the knee giving way.
Treatment:
In general, most partial or isolated PCL tears can be treated non-operatively because the PCL, with its synovial covering, has some ability to heal.
pcl reconstruction surgery is typically done as an outpatient procedure. Depending on graft choice, open incisions may be necessary to harvest the tissue that is to be used as the new PCL. Knee arthroscopy is then performed to inspect the knee, treat additional injuries (meniscus tears or cartilage damage), and to prepare the knee for the new PCL

bummer. get into some upper body weight training for a cpl months. when summer comes, you can start back up. buddy of mine & I used to say to ea other (regarding injuries) "give it 6 months"
so be a good patient & don't rush it. cuz you can make it worse & then the recovery time will wind up being even longer

Though this is a 6 year old thread, it seems the op has been dealing with the knee as recently as last November.
