Campy Chorus 11 Speed

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Campy Chorus 11 Speed

I know this it probably not a apples to apples comparison. But where does the new Campy Chorus 11 Speed stand vs. SRAM's (Force,RED) and Shimano (DA, Ultegra)?

Is it suppose to rival Force and Ultegra? Or is is more close to Red and DA?

Thanks,

Chorus falls here in the campy line up of 11 speed groups, going from cheapest to most expensive.

Athena
Chorus
Record
Super Record

I would suggest that it falls somewhere around Ultegra in the shimano world.

Depends who you ask. To me Chorus 11 speed is better than DuraAce or Red. But others will disagree. Depends mostly what ergos you prefer.
All the top of the line stuff is excellent. I ride 2010 Centaur 10 speed and love it.

I have been planning on upgrading my group to either Chorus or Record probably when the 2012 comes out and 2011 is discounted. The difference in price between Chorus and Record is about $300 if both groups have a Chorus cassette. The Record stuff looks better and weighs a little less but it works the same and feels the same, or so I am told.

Since I will have the group for a minimum of 5 years and more than likely it will be 10 years I may go with Record. It will be replacing a Campy triple. I will probably build a touring bike and put the triple on it.

One thing that is annoying me about Campy is there cassette selection. My options are 12/27, 12/29 or 11/25. What would be ideal for me would be a 11/28 but Campy doesn't make one. I am considering after market cassettes but they are typically heavier and don't shift as well.

Thanks, why do you like Campy more?

My bike had Campy on it when I bought it five years ago. I have tried Shimano but not SRAM. What I have now is a mix of Campy from 2003 and 2006 ten speed. What I like about Campy is the feel of the ergo hoods, the crisp shifting, the quiet drive train, I can jump five gears in one click, I can rebuilt it when it wears out and the fit and finish of Campy is the best of any of the groups, IMO. The stuff looks like a lot of attention was given to it when it was designed and built. It doesn't look mass produced. Also, I haven't done anything to it since 2007 when I put the triple on. I haven't even adjusted it. I have replaced the chain a couple of times.

Also, if I were to move to Shimano or SRAM, I would need to redish two sets of wheels.

Chorus falls in line with DA. I don't know about Sram!

It's good stuff!

I have road bikes with 105, Ultegra, Athena, and Chorus. I would say Chorus is a little nicer than Ultegra, Athena is about the same as Ultegra, and 105 is at the bottom. I like the Campy groups a tiny bit more for the ergonomics, 11 speeds, and style, but I can see that some people would not like the thumb shifters or the (more) limited cassette choices. If I were going to build another bike I would probably go with a Chorus/Athena mix, but I would be happy with Ultegra if it worked out that way.

Yup ... hoods and the five gears is great. And it's Italian.

My Chorus and Athena drivetrains are not as quiet as my old Ultegra 6500 group. But Ultegra is not Italian.

My "backup" bike got all Campy 2011 components: Chorus shifters, the rest Athena with the carbon crankset. I can't tell a big difference from the 2009 Chorus on my primary bike. The 2011 stuff shifts at least as well, if not a bit faster. I'm quite satisfied with it. I got mine from Ribble Cycles in the UK. Lots cheaper than in the states.

If pricing ever gets prohibitive for Campy parts, I'll probably try SRAM.

So far pricing on Campy and SRAM are close enough that pricing isn't an issue.

Having worked in a new very high end shop for around a year now, by far the most issues we have roll into the shop are SRAM related.

The only Shimano hoods I like are those of Di2.

I ride Campy 10 and love it. I can service everything just how I want to, it looks great, and it shifts even better. I rate Chorus 11 on par with Red and non-electric Dura Ace.

One thing I like about Campagnolo and SRAM is the dedicated brake lever.

I think they're different enough that the only useful way to compare is msrp. FWIW, I'd rather ride with Veloce than Dura Ace.
