How do Sora shifters work?

Being a newbie and also having even more newbie-er friends of mine ride my bike, I've had the left shifter jammed twice now. Bringing it in to the shop and having them fix it is fine and all but if it's at all possible I'd like to learn how to fix it myself, as it seems to be the only thing that I can't find out how to do in some book or on the internet. So two questions:
1. How do you fix a jammed sora shifter?
2. Where would I be able to find info on how the thing actually works/how to fix it?

Thanks!

You may want to ask in the Mechanics forum.

What exactly do you mean by "jammed?" Can you describe it in more detail? What were you doing when it jammed? Where you trying to shift both shifters at the same time?

The reason I ask is that I've done a lot of work on my bike but never worked on repairing shifter mechanics. That's an advanced topic, if you can even do it. If memory servers Campagnolo is more friendly to repairs but Shimano not as much.

When you got it fixed did they tell you exactly what was wrong with it? I've never heard of a jammed shifter.

i have sora components. You mentioned the shifter for the front rings jamming. I think something similar happens to me when I don't give it a full shift, it will get caught in the middle. If that is what you are referring to, keep pedaling and push and hold the shifter a second or 2 longer. You have to push the shifter as far as it can go...It should right itself. I have had it stuck between shifts and I just reshift or go back to the gear that you were just in.

I hope that helps.
