Training for my first century!

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Training for my first century!

I am going to be training for my first century ride in September. Does anyone have advice for a good training program?

Miles. Nothing works better than getting in the miles. If your seat in uncomfortable, adjust it or get a new seat. If your riding gear is uncomfortable, get new stuff. A century is 6-8 hours of non-stop exercise. If you are uncomfortable on a 20 mile ride, you will be crying by mile 60. Hydrate excessively. Eat food every 20-30 miles. There's really no training guidance I can give. If you can ride comfortably and stay hydrated and replenish the calories, you can get through a century. It's not a race.

Yep don't underestimate eating and hydration. Just get the miles in and if you can ride 50 miles and feel good at the end, you will be good to go.

If you wanna "survive" the ride, make sure you get in at least one 70-mile ride about 10-days prior. If you wanna have fun, get in two or more. As you ride these, pay attention to nutrition/hydration & what works for you (and what doesn't).

Make sure you know how to fix a flat and carry the equipment to do so.

Ride at least 5x a week, preferably 6x.

If the century is hilly, make sure you're getting in hills as well.
