Im always in the market for a new project. Suppose you had 3k sitting around solely to build a bike, obviously this budget will limit a few things but for 3 thousands bucks, what would you put together? For me, Id start with a Soma smoothie frame, some decent carbon fork, kit it with full ultegra, a pair mavic open pros with king hubs, speedplay pedals, thomson post and stem, and probably some conti gatorskins. saddlewise im not so picky, id probably save some dough and go with whatever forte sl ripoff seat is available at the time. handlebars could be something plain but ergo. Im thinking a bombproof speedy commuter would be a lot of fun.

budget dream bike is kinda a contradiction but.... Id start w/ a chineese no name carbon frame, fork, and handlebars, off ebay(~700). then Id spend around a grand on some campy wheels, eurus or zondas. that would leave me $1300 for my groupo which would probably afford me chorus 10. Id probably need some more cash for pedals, cables, cages......
NO budget dreambike Id still go campy all around sr11. same wheels maybe bora(?), Id aslo look at lightweights, williams, soul, reynolds. the frame /fork combo is tough. I want to say pinarello but there are so many different options out there that Ive never ridden. Id like to try out ridley, scott, bianchi....(the pin prince I rode was awesome) sorry I dont really have it nailed down just yet.

$3k would buy a heck of a used bike that could look like new. I just bought an unused $3k Cyfac frameset in perfect condition on Ebay for $350.

Dream bike was probably a bad term. What if he just said "build your best road bike for $3k". Does that work?

It's a matter of semantics. A dream bike doesn't have to cost more than $3k if you're not interested in the latest greatest which quickly becomes tomorrow's old news. C&Ver dream bikes usually cost well under $3k, but will likely be used. There are some really valuable dream bikes that actually have rust on them. It's all in one's head.

Longing for a Tail Wind
I'd wait for a deal on a Lynskey Cooper CX. Outfit it with 50 mm carbon wheels, disk brakes, and whatever deal on SRAM or Shimano groupset. I'd then totally ride the crap out of it.
