Components and Groups - Best Price Update?
I'm specing components for the latest project (finally) and all roads currently lead back to Performance. With their fairly low prices and 20% coupon, they are working out to be less expensive than other online sources including Colorado Cyclist, Excel Sports, Supergo and Superspokes.
Here's an example - Campy Record groupset (individually priced) Carbon Crank - $545, Shifters - $250, R-Der - $230, F-Der - $90, Brakes - $220, BB - $100, Cassette - $175, Chain - $40 Subtotal: $1650. Less 20%: $330 Total: $1320 + shipping This is far less than anywhere I've found. Similar savings accross the board on other groups - Shimano included. Where else should I be checking? 55/Rad |

I'm just pricing a bit ticket purchase and want to cover my bases. I'm considering Campy Record or Chorus, or Shimano DA and Ultegra 10. Other shops I can write off - pricepoint.com and Bullteksports.com 55/Rad |

Where do you all get the 20% coupons for performance?
Thanks! |
so w/ 20% coupon and 10% off team performance, i can get something that's $100 for $72? or is the 10% sort of like REI where you get a dividend back the next year to spend at REI?

He's taking the 20% off I think.
And for that matter, why go with record carbon? It's totally overpriced for what it does IMO. FSA's carbon cranks are supposed to be stiffer and cheaper. |
Team Performance 10% comes back in the form of coupons to be used in the store or online. Not cash savings but valuable nonetheless.

I was living in Chapel Hill, NC when Performance began doing business. I recall being able to walk in, ask for a part, and then have one of the owners point to one of the shelves in the back room where it could be found. I'd go and retrieve it for myself. I lived there again during grad school. I still miss being able to stop by the Performance store to pick up any little thing needed before riding the additional 2 blocks to the bike shop (M Cycles, owned by Michael Gleason) where most rides started. (Mike also custom-built some nice frames in his day. He built my first custom after the frame I was then riding got destroyed. Great guy. Knowing how much I liked to ride, and being one of his regular riding partners, he put me at the head of his waiting list. In less than 2 weeks, I was riding my new frame.)
Performance does tend to have good prices, and good service. However, maybe things have changed, but I learned to stay far away from their own Performance-brand products. But what I really liked were their tent sales where you could pick up some fantastic deals on discontinued products. I once bought a whole box of a dozen well-known name-brand tubular rims for something like $50. That was over 15 years ago. I think I finally trashed the last of those rims only a couple of years ago. But back on topic, have you asked other places to match or beat any prices you've found? You might give that a try, especially if you can convince them they'll be picking up a good customer for future purchases, too. (It's worked for me before.) |
Don't know if you'll find cheaper prices than what you quoted, but this is a good sanity check site:
http://comparisonpricing.com/ Also, Gary at GVH Bikes has pretty good prices on build kits. Also, check www.totalcycling.com. They are out Ireland and usually have some very good prices on Campy Stuff. |
I tend to use Best Bike Buys for comparison shopping.

MtnMan,
Thanks for the tip on www.totalcycling.com - their prices are pretty good, include customs and they have a flat rate for shipping with DHL. I've added them to my list of online bike dealers. I think that 55/Rad is doing a bit better with Performance at the 20% discount than Total Cycling, but it's competative. CycleSamms  |
trending towards campy now, eh? mmm... 10 speed, ti/carbon frame.... that's going to be one sweet ride when you're finished with it.
|
performance is having a big, crazy sale tomorrow for the team members, so i'm hoping that we'll see some nice things on the block then.
|
I've been doing a lot of shopping around. Performance is great, but one site I've found that has some really great deals at times is www.cambriabike.com I've bought quite a bit from them already. Some prices are higher, but they also have some great deals and they price match.

I've purchased from Ital-Tecno many times as they have the lowest price on some items. Ital-Tecno is also on Ebay.

wildjim, Do you know why do they make you call to order some items? All of the gruppos say to call. Do they try to upsell you, or sell you some other products?
