Mr Tuffy Tire Liner False Advertising

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mr Tuffy Tire Liner False Advertising

I ordered a set of Mr Tuffy Lite Tire liners from ebay. Advertised weight on the Tuffy website is 32 grams each per liner https://mrtuffy.com/ultralites.php. When I weighed mine, it came in at 63 grams! So Im thinking maybe someone did the switch-a-roo on me. Anyway, several months down the road, I decided I needed another set for my other bike, so this time I ordered from my LBS. Exact same thing, liner came in at 63 grams versus their advertised weight of 32 grams.
Ive emailed Mr Tuffy concerning the weight discrepancy, but they are not responding to my emails.
Where I live, goatheads are littered all over the road, I average 3 flats a week without the heavy liners.

Dude, that's one ounce more per wheel. Yeah yeah yeah, false advertising, etc. The way I see it you're not getting flats and if you just spit once before each ride you'll even out the weight.

Anybody seeking tire liners to prevent flats should not also be a weight weenie about it. If I owned Mr. Tuffy, I wouldn't even publish weights, or I'd have it say "weight: a lot, but you'll go faster with the extra weight than a flat tire"

Mr Tuffy has 2 types, the original and the Lite. The original claimed weight is 113 grams a pair or 56.5 grams each. Spitting is not an option for me. I paid extra for the Lite thinking I would get one that is lighter. The company seems to be packaging the same item in two different packages attempting lure road cyclist avoiding the extra rotational weight. I expect to get what I paid for and not to be tricked by this company.

Totally agree with you urbanknight. During goathead season, I get a flat 90 pecent of the time. Its either suck up the weight or fix a flat. Im a weight weenie, but I also dont like stopping to fix a flat. So if i had a choice between a standard liner or a ultra lite claimed at half the weight, well Im going for the lighter one. The point in all this is that companies shouldnt advertise weights that are way off.

I don't know how you did your math, but its 31 ounces more per wheel.

His problem is that the original tire liner is being put in the Lite packaging

Wow, are you serious? Do they not teach weights and measure in school anymore? 63 grams = 2.2222596 ounces. 31 ounces = 878.835217 grams.

ill agree why even worry about weight if you are adding it? thats just how i think as a weight weenie. also as a WW i know things dont always come in at claimed weights. you have to take that with a grain of salt. when i buy items for my bike and im looking so save weight i will search the web and ask around to find out real world weight before i buy.

Skip the Tuffys.
Get better tires.
We live in the desert southwest and lots of thorns, goatheads and usual road debris.
On our tandem and single we run 700x25mm Maxxis Re-Fuse tires. They have an aramid layer that will stop majority of punctures.
Average get a flat every 2,000 miles.

That makes sense. Return them and buy the cheaper but same item version.

I'm so glad I don't live in goathead country.

i'm a mr tuffy fan!

haven't had a flat in close to 2000 miles and i live in goathead country.

so i bought the original mr tuffy's a while ago and just built some nice light wheels and thought i would buy the new mr tuffy lites. they are not the same as the originals and are quite a bit lighter (adverstised as half the weight and i wouldn't doubt it). the plastic has shallow grooves in it (groovy???).

as the old ones are often discounted, it wouldn't surprise me if someone didn't put some old ones in a new package and sell them as new. or maybe someone just bought some ultra lite ones, took off their old ones, put them in the new packaging and thought to themselves "hey i could sell these and nobody would know".

the packaging lends itself to this deception.

rest assured the lite ones are indeed lighter than the originals. so much so i am still in doubt as to whether or not they offer equal protection.

While you're at it, get rid of that appendix, the extra kidney, tonsils, etc.

You mean bike manufacturers might *gasp* be lying about the weights of their products??? Shocking. Truly shocking.

I can't believe somebody would weigh a Mr. Tuffy liner.

I had a whole goathead thread going over in Communting. Lived through a dozen flats this year, so I went out and got some Mr. Tuffys (and a patch kit and Slime Skabs for backup). Same route, no flats: That's all the satisfaction I need. Also used Slime liners with the same positive results. I would not call 2 oz. significant, but if you own a digital scale like that, I guess you have yourself a gripe.

Huh, well I rarely find one in my tires, road or mountain biking. Maybe 3 or 4 times in 18 years. I knew it existed around here, but figured it must be in a much higher concentration elsewhere in the country to have so many threads dedicated to them.

Old thread, but for anyone else browsing by in the market for tire liners: I just purchased both the regular and ultra lite Mr. Tuffy liners and can confirm they are the exact same weight. 61grams each using an electronic scale. The only difference between the two are the cosmetic grooves which I suspect are only there to make the ultra lites look like they are actually different when in reality, they're made of the same material and of same thickness.

Save your money and buy the regulars if you need to. Personally I'd go with a different brand as supporting this kind of cynical marketing doesn't do anyone any good.

From their website:

Mr. Tuffy Ultra Lite, premium tire liners weigh 50% less than standard tire liners. How did we do it? Well, that’s our secret. Why did we do it? That’s easy. We wanted to extend flat tire protection to avid cyclists who previously felt the added weight was too high a price to pay for the convenience of flat-free cycling.

LOL what a joke.
