Wait - I need to buy all that crap to commute with? Even at $4 gas; it's cheaper to drive!

That designer stuff is classy and good for the city executive that commutes a few blocks, I think. Someone who also takes their bike inside - try leaving a $400 bag on a bike sitting outside in the city!

There is no way I would ride to work wearing a pair of khakis and leather cycling shoes. It's about a 10 mile ride to my office through some heavy traffic areas and in the summer, it's 85 or 90 degrees at 9 a.m. I'd be soaked wearing that kind of stuff.
This seems fine if you're riding a few blocks, but not a legitimate commute.
Besides, my office building has showers and lockers so I can ride in my normal team kit.

No Kate Spade, but I do have a pair of Philosophy Bags on my commuter.
Are they overly expensive for their intended purpose (commuting, shopping)? Yes. But I spent a bunch of time & money so my commuter/city bike would function and look the way I wanted, so I got a pair of hand-made in the US of A bags to match. I figure that since I had the $$$ in the bank, and these perfectly match my Brooks honey saddle and bar tape, and perform exceptionally well, so why not ride in style?

Professional Fuss-Budget
Yeah, I don't see much of a difference between spending a lot of money on a bike bag and a handbag.
I might add that plenty of roadies spend money on things that commuters would regard as superfluous, and run around wearing spandex -- often with team insignias to match pot bellies -- to boot. "People who live in glass houses should not throw stones..."

For the record, I am far from a style maven; I found the article interesting from a marketing (and cycling, of course) perspective.
