Building up a new set of new wheels and I was thinking of using Mavic Reflex rims (tubular). Of course I have all the misgivings of the p.i.t.a. tubulars can be, and since I'm such an indecisive person I'd like some opinions on tubulars

Just want some suggestions for some really strong puncture-resistant tubulars, and if they're useful for non-racers.

As someone who has raced many miles on tubulars and like them, I've never felt the need to use them for non-racing.

Try the Yellow Jersey tubulars, a guy I ride with really likes them, tells us every chance he gets.

Servizio Corse are good bargain ones to start with and are what I always think of when I read "Yellow Jersey sewups" --- 3 / $50.

As far as misgivings and PITA, I don't think they're any worse then riding a regular ol' non-protected clincher, which a lot of riders do. I tried Armadillos once hated the ride and didn't care for paying $50 apiece for them. Now I run Mr. Tuffies in all tires I can.

I've a sewup wheelset that I take out on special occasions mainly, when I think I can get out without riding in debris fields much.

Just get 3. Glue them all at once. Put 2 on wheels and put one in a bag to carry with you incase of on the road blowout. Ride home on freshly mounted tubular a little slower in the corners.

Tubulars are a P.I.T.A. and expensive. Don't use unless racing. I always had good luck/prefer Challenge Criteriums or Vittoria's.

I see questions about tubs come up now-n-then on the C&V threads, and I've just started riding them myself. I'd be interested to know why they are so race specific to you. Other than the obvious reasons of convenience.

Riding in chitty tubulars completely defeat the purpose of using tubulars these days in the first place. There are many clinchers that are pretty good for daily and racing use and their increased rolling resistance is such a tiny amount that it doesn't justify having to make a choice between clinchers and tubulars. A mute moronic point really.

The huge benefit to using tubulars over clinchers, and the only reason in my book really these days, is the comfort and feel factor. No excellent clincher comes even close. Anything else is just a mute point really. So, taking out the tubulars for a race only is completely impractical and moronic to me personally. Then again, this is like the guy that slaves himself to a car payment he can barely make just to have a car he takes out on sunny sundays. Moronic again.

This is coming from someone that has been riding tubulars exclusively for many years!

I have had great luck and great rides with the Specialized S-Works Turbo Hell Of The North Tubular. I now have several thousand miles on one pair, less on two other wheel sets with them.

I have a few bikes that run tubulars, but they are just "spares" that have gone out of my rotation. My oldest brother however, still is a tubular man.

We were just discussing tubulars a few days ago. I forget the brand, but he runs a little bit of Stan's in his, and doesn't get flats. I have a pair of Tufos that have managed to stay pumped to the moon for years it seems. I am sure those tires have outlasted the tubular cement by about 5 years!

Clement/Donnelly are tubeless tubulars that are made by the Tufo factory and can run with sealant. We usually glue them and run them until there is a flat then we put sealant in them. After they have sealant in them they seem to turn the compound a bit harder within a year or two from that. Still runnable by all means but not as supple.

Yeah I just called them like a month ago trying to find some old Sachs 7 speed IGH stuff and they had it but didn't want to sell without selling the hub and the customer had a perfectly working hub. I don't think YJ is going anywhere just like Larry Black in Maryland though we did loose Harris Cyclery recently so maybe there is a limit but so far these guys keep chugging along.
