Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm a 60 year old former software engineer and consider myself technologically up to date. I'm coming to the conclusion that the utility of FB is a function of the "friends" you select. For that reason, I think I might drop out of FB and start over with a clean slate and be much more careful about whom I friend. I suspect psimet wisely picked the right friends, but many of us made the mistake of friending everyone that happened by. Like any tool FB can be, and is, used foolishly by people of all ages but there is clearly a place for it in the toolbox, imo.

Please allow me to introduce myself, as some saints once sang - I'm a heavy FB user. I find it a great way to stay in touch with all my friends (I am not really a big fan social email/phone calls), especially now that I spend the bulk of my time on the other side of the globe. I dont post anything substantial about my life on FB, but keep the updates lighthearted - those small and frequent daily exchange of jokes and wisecracks with friends do a great job of maintaining the ties of friendship. I think FB is great!

Btw, re the topic of unwanted people on the friends list: I have a lot of friend requests from people who have come stayed at our resort and dived with us - I do end up accepting these requests. But these guys get lumped into a privacy setting where they dont get to post on my wall or see any of my updates. Works well.

I had like 500 friends on facebook at one point, then one day I decided to delete everyone who I hadn't talked to in about a month. I was left with 170.

Having been so proud of not ever having used facebook and twitter, I have been told that I must create a facebook page by my real friends who are now in a different country. I have no intention of having millions of faceless internet friends except for all of bikeforums members. I'm picky.

I use FB. it keeps me in contact with the friends I've made who are now overseas. It also keeps me in contact with my family who are also overseas. the only FB friends I have never met in person are the people on BF I've befriended.

I also use it to play a harmless but addictive game.

Correct - it is what you make of it (no need to start fresh, though - just start culling).

I love facebook. Like anything else you get out of it what you put into it. On a personal side it's kept me in touch with a lot of people, I've made some good new friends, and I've even 'gotten lucky'. On a business side I've booked several thousands of dollars of photography jobs from clients referred to me on Facebook. Businesses especially should have a presence on it.

Dude, what undue stress? You choose when to check on FB, people log on every few hours or every few months.
You make it sound like every time you get a message, FB hunts you down and reads it to you while putting you in a chokehold...

My wife has a facebook account. I post pictures of my bicycles there to show my college room-mate, who's one of her 'friends'.

This is why I should be spending more time on facebook. I could get into being "friends" with my wife's friends...

If you have to rely on the Internet in order to keep in touch with your friends, then you should get some better friends.

Okay.

I'm wagering that a) you're old enough to remember saying the same thing when phones became commonplace or b) you've never moved outside of a 20 mile radius from where you grew up (this is assuming that you're not still living with mom) or c) you don't have two friends to rub together to make a third.

You control who you make "friends" with so it's not as if there will be dozens of "friend" requests waiting for you when you sign up. I have an account but got tired of posting things on it and being bombarded with status updates etc. when I opened my page. I blocked just about everyone from my News Feed and now only use Facebook to keep updated with my groups weekend rides.

As a side note I recently went to an HR harassment course where they discussed being careful what you post on Facebook if you have co workers on your "friend" list.

Never have co-workers as friends. Always a bad idea.
