Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

first road bike help

I have been riding my mountain bike around town about 15-20 miles a day I really want to get a road bike and I am most likely going to have to start with a very entry level bike. I started out with a budget of 300-500 and saw several bikes on bikesdirect.com. However after visiting a few bike shops I am willing to spend a little more however every bike shop I went to didn't have an option under 1000. I have found two on Bikesdirect and would like your opinion on which is better. Or if there is a completely different bike someone would recommend. I am 6'6" 250 with a 36" stand over.

Schwinn basically nicer rims and tired with last years 105's

Windsor heavy cheap rims but 2011 105's

The Schwinn is a steel frame, a little heavier probably, but a smoother ride than a cheap alum frame. I prefer steel frames personally, especially if the road conditions where you ride include chipseal or other rough surfaces. Personally, I'd go for the Schwinn. It'll make a perfect commuter or backup bike a couple years down the road for you when you decide to upgrade again.

Schwinn, only because it has nicer rims and its a double. The Windsor is a triple.

I would go with the large size Schwinn with a 36" inseam. A 62cm (XL) is probably going to be too big for you. I have a 34" inseam and ride between 56 and 59cm bikes depending on design. However I'm no fit expert and this is one of the downsides of buying a bike online that you have not tested yourself.

Last year's 105 is the 5600 and the newer 105 is the 5700. The 5700 have subtle improvements to their shifters and brakes to give them better, smoother, shifting and stronger brakes that take less effort and are more powerful. However, aside from the 5700 105 brake calipers, unless you have the complete 105 set (shifters and derailleurs) you won't notice the difference between a 5600 or 5700 105 group. You will notice it in the brake calipers. Nevertheless, whether it's the 5600 or 5700, the 105 component group is very good, robust, and very reliable.

The Schwinn Le Tour Legacy will ride better than the Windsor Fence. The Windsor Fence will be lighter though and easier to climb. Whether its a double or triple, it doesn't matter. The rider determines how fast the bike will go.
